Question about canned fruit
(Preview)
When fruit such as peaches, pears, apricots, and apples are canned, do they lose their nutrition value? I am also concerned about the amount of sugar used in the canning process, either in home canning or at a Church cannery. Anybody have insight into this?

Bags for composting human waste
(Preview)
Some Swedish inventor came up with bags for composting human waste. If he does manage to sell them for 2 or 3 cents a bag, you could easily get a year's supply of these things for when things collapse. If he does start selling them this summer, and you can buy them in the US, I will buy some.

I hate gardening
(Preview)
Does anybody else detest gardening and do it just because it is a commandment? I can actually enjoy digging up and preparing the ground, and even hoeing the rows. But after that my wife, fortunately, takes over. She decides what, when and where to plant. She has to tell me when and how much to water...

Meat Birds
(Preview)
Eight weeks ago today I received my shipment of chicks: 4 laying hens, 8 meat birds, and 6 extra male chicks to keep the rest warm. Last Saturday morning I butchered the first meat bird, and this morning I butchered the last. What a learning experience! And yummy too.

Stocking up on vegetables
(Preview)
Farmers markets seem to be everywhere this time of year, and soon all sorts of pick your own opportunities will be appearing. Buy a lot of vegetables and can them while you can. It's very likely that food is going to get a lot more expensive this winter, and it'll be nice to have food already in the cupboar...

Food storage tip
(Preview)
If you like milk fat, store cans of evaporated milk in addition to dry milk. If you add a cup of water to a cup of evaporated milk, you have something that is a lot like milk and has milk fat in it. This isn't as important for baking, where non fat dry milk is fine. But, for instance, if you want to add milk to you...

Church focus on preparation
(Preview)
I don't think it would be news to anyone here to say that the church has been focusing a lot on preparation lately. But it was interesting to me that at a local faire the local wards got together and had a table on preparedness. Not just physical preparedness, of course, but spiritual and financial. Stil...

Gratitude
(Preview)
On a prepper board that I belong to, people are discussing how to prep now that disaster seems to loom over us. How grateful I am that I heeded counsel and have worked at gathering supplies through the years. Yes, it has been a nuisance to haul it around when I've moved. Yes, it takes up space. Yes, I could h...

Canned cheese experiment
(Preview)
I love the canned cheese that you can get from MRE Depot, but I discovered something recently: It just does not melt. At all. Ever. We opened a can and used it for cooking. I spread some of it on a dish that we ate most of. Someone decided to reheat the leftovers and forgot about it in the oven. It was there for...

Water barrels
(Preview)
I think I've mentioned before that, if there's a soda bottling plant nearby (such as Coke or Pepsi) you can frequently get used 55 gallon food grade barrels from them. Another thing I discovered is that honey producers use 55 gallon food grade barrels as well. There is a honey producer in my area that se...

Capons
(Preview)
Anyone know the best way to go about making a rooster into a capon? The only stuff I've found so far is vague, saying that you remove the rooster's gonads either surgically or with an injection of female hormones. I got an order of chicks (I have 51 cute chicks in my house right now). Half of them are destin...

Corned beef
(Preview)
Just wondering if corned beef can be home canned and if so, what's the procedure? Can't find an answer in any of my canning books or online. I assume it could be, but am wondering if the spices would get too strong after awhile like sage in sausage. Could I cook it (at least 2/3 the way done), strain the spic...

Gardening when it counts

What do you do with apples as part of your food storage? We're going to the church farm to pick this week, and I anticipate gleaning a lot of them :).

Local church farms
(Preview)
I just got an email sent out to my stake. Apparently the local church farm has produced some hard red wheat that they are willing to let the stake members buy for $10 for a 50lb bag. I got an email recently from the local group that does bulk food purchases from Walton Feed. Normally we can get it filled i...

I am having a boring life Yesterday I was at Wal-Mart buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet Sheriff the Wonder Dog and was in the checkout line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. Pick your own farms

For three years now we've gone to a pick your own food farm during harvest. These are farms where you pick the vegetables yourself. So, I was at the cannery today planning to get some oxygen absorbers to use in storing some stuff in buckets and they told me that they do NOT recommend doing that.
