Meat Birds

Eight weeks ago today I received my shipment of chicks: 4 laying hens, 8 meat birds, and 6 extra male chicks to keep the rest warm.

Last Saturday morning I butchered the first meat bird, and this morning I butchered the last.  What a learning experience!  And yummy too. lick.gif

So... details, please!

Cut off their heads? Was there lots of blood? Did the kids help? Did you pull out their insides? What did you make with them? Could you seriously taste the difference from store-bought chicken?

Wringing their necks works well. Or the axe and the chopping block.
I've been thinking about picking up some meat birds and canning them once they're processed.

I detailed the process, with pictures even, on my blog.  The post is entitled, Blood and Guts.

DoubleD, I have a moveable pen, yes.  It's just a bottomless pen, 4x8 wide/long, and 2 feet tall.  Half of it is covered, and half is chicken wire.  At that size, I can rather easily pull it to a new location daily.

Here's a direct link, Coco.

http://boks-funnyfarm.blogspot.com/2008/07/blood-and-guts.html

I haven't read it, myself. I can barely bring myself to get out of bed due to the nausea these days. I'm so not reading about chicken butchering right now. Everyone else can feel free to enjoy it, though.

Yeah, coco... there's a thing called "scrolling down". It's a good skill to have. wink.gif

Also in the right sidebar is an archive list, and you can link to the chicken posts from there.

Or, you can search for the word "chicken" and it should bring up all posts I've tagged with that word.

Stalking you and leaving ammo on your doorstep doesn't phase you but cutting the head off a chicken askeers ya? You, my dear, are an enigma.

Dude. You didn't cut off the head. You slit its little throat, for crying out loud! It was alive and had a soul and you cut its neck with a knife, dude. Let it bleed there and die. Who really knows what you're capable of now?

It's amazing how hunger motivates a person. ;)

I'd be more afraid if she recorded the chicken running around the yard with it's head cut off, as humorous as that would be.

Besides is there really a "right" way to slaughter an animal?

Have you slaughtered a chicken lately, Mirk?

I have six more birds to kill - we have six immature cockerels, and a couple of them are starting to crow, which is a big no-no in the middle of town. The cone is too big to hold them so we probably will end up chopping off their heads. I'm not sure the hatchet we have is sharp enough for that task, though...

Yeah, people don't like cocks in urban areas. Although two towns in Northern Colorado are going to authorize people in city limits to have chickens.

TCFDOBHASPD*     can neither confirm or deny the existence of headless chickens.

Of course, now that you've told us the name of that division, you'll have to change it.
I sorta view my chickens as part of my food supply, although I'm not sure that they'd survive roving bands of thieves bent on getting food at any cost.
