FYI: I do not know how this affects any of the other canneries, other then what is indicated in the body of the message.

Advisory: FALL FAMILY CANNING AT THE LINDON CANNERY

Dear Subscribers:

We know that everyone is anticipating the release of the Fall Family Canning Registration for the Lindon Cannery; and for those of you who called earlier in the summer, we indicated that we would have the schedule ready for the end of August. Since that time, several things have happened to make us temporarily postpone releasing a family canning schedule for fall.

First, since the temperatures remained cold for so much longer this spring, we are having a difficult time completing our welfare peach canning assignments. The peaches are not ripening in the usual time frames and out of the first 17 days scheduled to work on the peaches--we have had to cancel 11 of them. We are at the mercy of the peachs time table and until we have a better idea of how long it will take to can all that we have been assigned to do, we cannot begin to schedule our family canning dates.

We are in constant contact with the Church orchards to help us anticipate our schedules. Right now, the time we have available to do family canning will be very limited and we are trying to determine how to make the most of the little time we may have. So, this is the year that everyone will see that the Welfare Cannery (Wet Pack) is really here for welfare assignments and the family canning opportunities are blessings that come when we are able to schedule it around the welfare assignments.

Second, ALL of the Church Canneries have temporarily discontinued family canning of meat and poultry products as they evaluate these products with respect to the Churchs overall canning objectives. This includes chicken & turkey chunks, beef chunks, pork chunks, ground beef, beef stew, chili, taco meat, sloppy jo meat, cream of chicken soup and ham & beans. Canneries that currently can meat for welfare assignments will continue with those assignments, however, these products will not be available for patrons to purchase.

Please be patient while this evaluation process takes place. We have no further information available than what we have said above; and as this email is now distributed to over 5,000 patrons, we want to avoid receiving as many phone calls when there is no further information to share at this time.

Remember that when we do have the family schedule available, you must have the Adobe Reader (a free download) on your computer to print off the schedule. We will not process registrations that are not in the correct format. You can copy the following link into your browser to download the Reader:

Please remember that we do not respond to any emails sent to this address. You must call the Lindon Cannery at 785-0998 with any questions. For Family Home Storage (Dry Pack) questions, you must call 785-0997.

Our ward has an orchard assignment to pick peaches this week. I don't know about the Boise cannery, but as far as the orchard goes everything is on schedule so far, and we have a bumper crop of peaches.

Changes in the Colorado cannery, too. Here's part of the email we received:

September sign ups (except PEACHES) are now null and void, out the window, kaput, etc. So are the October signups.

Here are some of the new rules:

Patrons Responsibily

1) Individual MUST call or e-mail their desires to the Cannery directly themselves
2) If there is ANY meat in the product, the Cannery will send the individual (preferably via e-mail) a "Note of Ownership (Bill of Sale)"-----(see attachments: a sample is enclosed for the Cream of Chicken soup)----- which must be returned TO THE CANNERY by August 28th.

ALL PRODUCTS ARE ON A FIRST  COME FIRST SERVED BASIS region wide.

3) The individual MUST sign up to be able to buy the product. No "walk-ins" can purchase. The Patron can only buy the amount he/she ordered--no more, no less. There will also not be any other "leftover" products availabe for purchase.

Hey Historian - is this what you got?  I'll stick the whole thing here (just removing personal info):

New Aurora Wet-Pack Cannery Rules
Dear Stake and Ward Leaders:
The rules for use of the Aurora Wet-Pack Cannery have changed.  The following information pertains to the Aurora Wet-Pack Cannery ONLY and is effective immediately.  This information needs as wide and as immediate a distribution as possible, as the first canning session in September requires this new process to be completed before 28 Aug by any members wishing to participate in the Sept 2008 wet-pack canning activities.
Historically the Aurora Wet-Pack Cannery has been underutilized.  This is our opportunity to show our support and use this valuable resource.  Please insure that Stake and Ward Cannery specialists are informed of this change.
The Lord has blessed us with a wonderful resource to assist us in becoming prepared.  The scriptures teach that preparation on our part removes the fear in our lives.  May we all use these blessings as the Lord would have us do.

CanningJars.jpgSincerely,
~ Brother Neal - Colorado Springs Regional Welfare Specialist ~
All former rules & calendars for family wet-pack canning have been replaced with the following guidelines:
1. Humanitarian Wet-Pack Canning Assignments will continue to be made through normal stake and ward priesthood leaders.  This message contains calendars showing these humanitarian assignments, but the instructions contained herein apply ONLY to family canning.
2. The responsibility for participating at the wet-pack cannery and building family use/emergency food store is being placed squarely on the shoulders of individual member families.
3. Stake and ward canning specialists (and other leaders) will distribute wet-pack canning scheduling calendars 1 month ahead of time (previously calendars were for entire year).
4. When a family wishes to participate in any given canning session, it will be their responsibility to call or email the cannery to make a reservation.
5. The reservations will be accepted by the cannery, with the proviso that canning sessions will be filled from the BEGINNING of the item canning period, regardless of how many open canning days are available on the calendar for that product.
6. Some products may have more than 1 canning session per day (See calendars and check with cannery for specifics).
7. The cannery will contact the member as the canning period approaches and confirm the members participation in the session.
8. Canning sessions will be filled first come, first served therefore it behooves members to make their reservations early!!!!!!
9. If the product includes the use of meat (meats, chilies, soups, etc), US Government regulations require an additional administrative step.  Once the member makes their reservation, a Note of Ownership or a Bill of Sale will be sent to the member via email, fax, or mail (an explanation of this document is included as an attachment).
10. The Note of Ownership" (Bill of Sale) MUST be filled out, signed, and returned to the cannery and received by the cannery NO LATER THAN 7 (seven) days prior to that particular canning session or the member will NOT be allowed to participate in the canning session.
11. The member is then REQUIRED to accept the meat product canned during the canning session and purchase the canned item.  The product CANNOT be given to anyone else, and if the member fails to come and pay for the meat product, the cannery will be required to dispose of their canned product.
12. Once the reservation is made, paperwork completed, the member must come to the cannery, complete the session, and then purchase the product.

Interesting. Well, what I heard at the cannery here (Boise) is that the USDA is changing the enforcement (or interpretation) of some rule. That is causing issues with the meat canning. I was told that they'll be doing meat again next year, but for the rest of this year they've suspended it. They even have meat product that they cannot sell. I picked myself up a green card in hopes of being able to buy more meat early next year. Those strange rules others have posted make that look dubious. Oh, well, if I have to I'll ask hubby to go do a session to get our meat. (I don't can meat while pregnant, it's a rule.)

Oh, and btw, the issue with peaches must be very localized to Utah, because that's what I canned today.

You can order very similar meat products from here. There is even a discount code someone posted somewhere here for 20% off that should still work. I think the discount code is fluwikie. Anyway, with the discount code you pay just about as much for a case of hamburger (including shipping) as you would at the church cannery, which is a pretty good deal. They have beef chunks, chicken chunks, and other kinds of meat too. So the church may not be canning meat for the immediate future, but you can buy it already canned for pretty much the same price.
