An unfortunate trend

Mirk has mentioned that he has overheard people talking about how they'll just take what they need by force if the situation arises. Well, while discussing the bailout at work, two of my coworkers, who are very liberal, started talking about what they would do if things got really bad. One said that he had two thousand laying around, so maybe he should go get a gun and bullets and take what he needs when the time comes.
This person is a single male with no children. For two thousand, he could get really nice food storage. But his first thought was to get a gun and take what others had put away.

I have a cousin in SLC who always lightheartedly pokes fun at me for being a reclusive survivalist nutcase because I live out in the middle of nowhere, CO. Today he told me he's buying a shotgun.

My wife will be taking some NRA protection training classes and getting her CCP in the next little while.

Ok, word is out that Mormons have food. I think I'll start letting it be known that some of us prepare in other areas as well.

Yeah, amazing why people do not seem to have a shred of self-reliance. Like it has to be pointed out or taught to them... sure IS an unfortunate trend. Yeah, I think if we hear people like arbi ran into a good shot back at them might be in order...

"What do you mean - 'get' a gun?? You might be a little late now, pardner."

"Yeah, I find the (babble off some major kickass bullet here) is the best bet - I can get a cluster of 12 at 500 yards."

"When the SHTF it'll be waaaay too late to be looking to buy a gun."

"And besides shooting, don't forget other skills like boobytrapping to protect your stash while you're out pillaging others, and also survival and evasion skills so when psychotics like myself come tracking your ass you might have a icecube's chance in hell."

It's unfortunate that our desire to adopt makes it nearly impossible for us to have a gun. I hope and pray that things don't reach the point where we need one.

A high council speaker in our ward recently injected a note of mockery about having a gun while promoting preparedness and food storage.

I started a rather interesting poll on lds.net.  "Does someone in your home own a gun or other means of self defense?"

As of right now, it's 65% yes, 35% no.

Those are higher percentages than I thought.  I'm sure they're higher than reality because I'm only polling people who look at lds.net's preparadness forum who are willing to talk about guns, but still - I was guessing maybe 30% would say yes tops.

I consider that good news.

Also good news, my wife did her 8 hour personal protection class on Saturday.  The LM family just doubled it's ability to defend itself in certain situations.

That high of a number surprises me, too.

Good for Mrs. LM!

I was talking with some members on food and preparedness. Stated that if someone needed food, they have food and would take care of them, that they don't have ANY guns. Acted as if there were some kind of nobility in such silliness. Stated that a member of the stake presidency said that if someone broke in needing food, they would feed them and send them on their way.

Sure, when it all goes to crap, yes, someone will take a meal and be on their way.rolleyes  I just left out, figured I would not get far by telling them they might be on their way after they had their way with the women, killed them and took everything.  2.5 years as a criminal attorney has taught me a thing or two of human nature.

Sometimes, I think people are beyond help.  I think of Capt. Moroni's letter to Pahoran about how one cannot just sit there, but must act before the Lord will help.

I don't recall a lot of raping, pillaging, and senseless murder being a part of the Great Depression. I'm no history buff, either.

I think we're talking about a food storage situation, and there are many scenarios where, if you're living off food storage, those things might be likely.

Besides, there are a lot of things about the Great Depression that aren't widely reported. For instance, there were serioues fears of rebellion.

When we were not in a depression, many criminals kept me busy stealing and robbing. One client bashed a near-blind man's head in with a brick to steal from him. One girl attacked and beat another to steal five dollars. There are many such cases. If there is a famine/economic/epidemic/SHTF crisis, I have no illusions of what could be. Add to the modern day conveniences we now have that could disappear in serious problems and thrusting people into more primitive living, no services, no law enforcement.

I agree with val - when people are suddenly staring starvation and death in the face, the average Joe becomes an animal.

We have proof of what Val says - just look at New Orleans after Katrina. Even some policemen were participating in the looting.

I try to get it through people's head that when society breaks down they "ain't seen nuthin' yet".
