Continued food storage shortages

I got an email recently from the local group that does bulk food purchases from Walton Feed. Apparently, someone back east has put in a massive order, and even though our local co-op is a large and regular customer, we can't get our semi-annual order filled until January. Normally we can get it filled in October.
This run on food storage seems even more massive than the y2k one.

I was just thinking of that today, looking at the sparse bags of rice in Wal-Mart...

A couple days ago in Macey's the thought came that I should just buy up food like a madwoman - to hell with the credit card balance. Then I thought, "Sheesh, I'm kinda' nuts here." confuse.gif

That isn't how things around here are at all. In fact I saw lots and lots of rice at decreased prices just this weekend. Whole wheat flour is going down more slowly than I'd like, but it is going down, and there's plenty.

Don't know where you are but we have an Amish/whole foods store in the area....we can order bulk from them, get our product back within two weeks and pay no shipping.  have a look around, sometimes less obvious is best! ctr

I do get a lot of vegetables from the local pick your own farm. I haven't found a place yet for bulk, packaged foods, like buckets of wheat. But I guess that it's worthwhile looking into it. Weld County in Colorado has more agriculture than most other counties in the country.

We had the same prob with Walton, that's how we ended up at the Amish store.  We can order ANYTHING from them, powdered eggs/dairy, seasonings, any grain you can think of.....kinda neat really.  A little more expensive but worth it when you now you can get it now and you don't have a minimum amount you need to order!

It'd be nice to be able to get stoves and stuff like that from the Amish too.Unfortunately there are no Amish settlements that I know of in Colorado. There may be other similar things, though.

There is a hardware store called Northern Tool, don't know if it's in your area, we bought a wood stove for $479.  We're building the surround this week and next and by the time it gets cold we should be in business! The stove has a flat top surface so in an emergency we can cook on it.  We are lucky and wood is plentiful and cheap!

There's some book called Roughing It Easy or something like that and she tells you about building grills out of your wheelbarrow and stuff... she's like a 70's... who is that one guy? He can make anything out of a paper clip and duct tape? confused.gif

I'm getting some more of those biodegradeable baby wipes in case there's an interruption in the water for some reason... good for sponge baths.
