Local church farms

I just got an email sent out to my stake. Apparently the local church farm has produced some hard red wheat that they are willing to let the stake members buy for $10 for a 50lb bag. Obviously, if you're not in the Greeley stake, that doesn't help you much. But it might be a good idea to keep your eye out for church bargains like that in your area.
I haven't checked the price of a 50lb bag at the cannery lately, but I imagine that it's more than $10. The church charges just its costs, but when getting it from the local farm they have lowered transport costs at the very least. It's definitely cheaper than Waltons, which is up to almost $24 a bag, even before shipping.

The Caldwell, Idaho orchard still had peaches on the trees, last I heard. They're free for the picking. They're done doing them at the cannery so what's left is being offered to us. I think apples are on now, and since they can't use anything that's touched the ground, you can glean them for free. Even if you want to pick and buy them, the prices are usually very good compared to the other orchards.

I still have peaches, so I'm with you! If these dang tomatoes ever quit drying, I'm going to dehydrate the rest of them. I've heard they're really, really good that way.

I really wish our tomatoes would've made it this year. I miss those...

How are you dehydrating them? I had a goal today to pick one food to dehydrate (even if I bought it fresh at the store...) and BAM! Here's your post! It's a TOTAL sign. worship.gif

I sliced cherry tomatoes in half and put them in the dehydrator. Not worth it. Sliced some romas, those dry a lot faster and have a better flavor. I figure they'll be great for flavoring things.

You can build a solar oven out of household parts, which works as a dehydrator too.
