Apples

What do you do with apples as part of your food storage? We're going to the church farm to pick this week, and I anticipate gleaning a lot of them :).

It doesn't make sense to me to make applesauce, when I can buy it at Costco in plastic bottles at a price I think is reasonable. I'm going to can some apple pie filling this year, maybe even freeze some. I think I'll dry a lot, too, depending on when my friend needs her dehydrator back.

Speaking of which, I've learned this week that cutting cherry tomatoes in half and dehydrating them isn't worth it to me. Lots of labor and they take FOREVER to dry. The sliced roma tomatoes dry much faster, and have a sweeter taste than the cherry tomatoes, which are surprisingly tart.

I froze some apple slices in freezer bags... just peeled them, sliced them, tossed them in and froze.  Wait - did I put something on them?  Can't remember... it was 2 falls ago I think...

Not sure what to do with them..haven't tried anything yet. confuse.gif  They just sit there and take up room.  But I'm guessing I can put them in an apple pie or cobbler or make apple muffins or use them in fruit salad...

I bet they freeze well. I'll have to try that with some. Could even make apple butter or something if they come out mushy.

We had apple trees in our front yard until last year.

We had an apple peeler, slicer and dehydrator.

I love dried apples. I sprinkled a little sugar on top of them just before drying... YUM

The only thing better is dried pears.

When preserving apples, if you use a little bit of lemon juice they don't turn brown.

Well we did red delicious, instead of winesaps like we did last year, so I guess that changes my canning plans a bit. I suppose these won't make very good pie filling. Hopefully they dry well.

Something we did with peaches was put the cut ones in a solution of 1/2 gallon water and 2 ground-up vitamin C tablets, and they kept their color beautifully.
