Hold kids back a grade or not?

This article is from Australia, but I've frequently heard of the same thing happening in the US. A kid is promoted to the next grade, regardless of whether he's ready for it, for social reasons. I think that this does a kid a disservice. I understand their reasoning - they want to keep the kid with his own social group, for his comfort and theirs. But it doesn't work that way in the real world. In almost any jjob, you're going to have a wide range of ages, social groups, etc. It's much more useful for a child to put knowledge into his head, so that he can be successful later in his life.

Its an easy thing to say, unless its your kid.  My brother was held back a grade.  I don't see any social ramifications in his life due to it.

I have a brother who was held back a grade. He did well, actually got a 4.0 all through high school.

My brother stayed back one grade.  He is now a graduate of BYU and doing great in life.  If the grades are not there then repeating the class is  (IMHO) the best way to get a child to learn.  Of course I have a neice that has been held back twice for poor grades and will probably be held back a third time.  She won't do her homework and doesn't care about her grades or doing well in school.  Maybe when she is 16 and still in junior high she will finally get the picture.
