Federalist #2

http://thomas.loc.gov/home/histdox/fed_02.html

"That they (members of the Continental Congress) were individually interested in the public liberty and prosperity, and therefore that it was not less their inclination than their duty to recommend only such measures as, after the most mature deliberation, they really thought prudent and advisable.

These and similar considerations then induced the people to rely greatly on the judgement and integrity of the Congress..."...This might have changed, but this sure hasn't:

"That body (the Congress) recommended certain measures to their constituents, and the event (Declaration of Independence) proved their wisdom; yet it is fresh in our memories how soon the press began to teem with pamphlets and weekly papers against those very measures."...The press had trouble gettting it right from the start, a fine tradition they preserve jealously.

John Jay argues persuasively for the maintenance of a United nation on the American continent, citing the common religion, language, and culture of the people.  This is a powerful argument against "multi-culturalism".  I think America can stand to have citizens with different ethnic backgrounds and different religions.  But there must be a common bound among the citizens of the nation, and this is the American culture of Fair Play, the Rule of Law, Capitalism and Industriousness, and the American Creed of Liberty and Justice.  And a common language cannot be forgotten, either.

I think that Lincoln also took the words of Jay to heart, for it was his utmost desire to preserve the Union--before anything else, that was paramount.

Shiz,

I could not agree more, in fact the breakdown of this homogenity is possibly the reason we are no longer "...induced to rely greatly on the judgement and integrity of the Congress..."
