Apology

Recently some moderation took place on the board. It was done in such a way as to cause embarrassment to the person moderated. I apologize for that. I have talked with the other moderators, and we think that we can do this in a way that will not cause embarrassment in the future.

It also happened over a long weekend, which is why many of us weren't there to help deflect and defend and smooth things over. So if said fellow expected me to be there, I'm really sorry, cuz I would've loved to have been more involved in fighting for ya.

Alas, When I'm away from the computer, I stay away, and when I'm not... you can't get me to shut up!

I hope that if the wronged party reads this, that he will concede that we are new to this moderating gig, and therefore learning. We have only the best of intentions, but make plenty of mistakes while trudging up the learning curve.

Peace out.

I'm moderately incensed! I have no idea which thread was moderated, nor who the individual concerned was, but I stand as moderately incensed simply on principle!

As a reference for newcomers, this is the apology thread that was referred to on the now locked "Take it to Ornery" thread on that other board.

Thanks for bumping this to the top, Bok!

It is a good reminder that we don't want anyone to leave this forum mad at another.  The ideals and principles the forum policy is based on here is simple... we know that from time to time, there is going to be offense taken or given, rarely intentionally and usually unintentionally.  It is not because we talk about politics or things that aren't allowed in that other forum.  It is simply because we are all imperfect beings.  I feel the best way to handle this is to have open and honest discussion (despite it being uncomfortable at times) that includes a cooling down period to let emotions settle, open ears for listening to one another, and when necessary an objective third party to mediate and help the parties come to a fair resolution.

PF, if you are lurking and ever read this, I'm saddened to hear you still hold a grudge over the mistakes you feel were made.  It isn't really fair of you, though, to openly infer that this forum is hypocritical.  You really did not give us adequate chance to do due dilligence (it was a holiday weekend, and you did not avail yourself of using that time to cool down) and form a quorum to handle your request, and then rather than giving us a second chance, chose to withdraw.  Your whole response was quite uncharacteristic of the PF we knew/know at the other forum.  You weren't banned, and you are welcome here, should you ever change your mind about participating.

It's a locked thread now... as it probably should be. I've attempted to send multiple emails to PF in the past, and never heard as much as a peep from PF. Just once in a while PF sounds off against Bountiful as though PF's treatment is typical of all who join the board. I think that's unfair and try again to straighten things out, but then... the thread gets locked... as it probably should be...

Sigh...

It was inferred that we tend to moderate any opinion that isn't the same as our own. But, logically, that can't be possible. I don't 100% agree with anyone on this board. I don't even mostly agree with most people. For instance, I couldn't be further away from Shiz' opinions on conspiracies and third parties. But he is perfectly welcome to post here (and does occassionally), and I have never once moderated one of his threads or comments.

I certainly don't 100% agree with any of the moderators. They have all said things at times that I really don't agree with.

The key to moderation is making it about maintaining civility, and that is a really hard balance to strike.

Opinion does, of course, enter into moderating. It is inevitable. Even if we were to set up a script to moderate Bountiful, that script would reflect the prejudices of the scripter in question. But I think we've been pretty successful lately at not moderating with opinion as the deciding factor.

My statistics views are pretty limited. I have a graph of total number of views for each day of the last week. I'll look and see if we spike over the next few days. But we have already had one new user sign up, which is good. I just wish that all the users who signed up participated. But then again, I can't realistically expect everyone to like Bountiful.

Hey, now that is a great idea to increase membership and participation!  Good call Bok!  Hear is your corporate gold star of the day!

How much do we have in the coffers for running a professional rant compaign?    Why depend solely on one person's word of mouth when we can pay a full time staff to do it 7x24x365!

I'm was not witness of the PF incident here (at least, I don't recall it) so I can't comment on that.  However...

This happens every time Bountiful is mentioned.  He seems to feel it as his moral duty to warn the world about our faults.  But you know what they say:  Negative publicity is better than none at all.  Hey arb - can you access the views by date and time?  I wouldn't be surprised to find that we get a little spike in Guest visits after each little rant.

I'm only aware of him commenting on Bountiful once over at Nauvoo and that was today.  Perhaps I'm wrong, having missed it somewhere or maybe it was deleted or something.

Gracie makes a habit of deleting such discussions. In fact, she'll probably delete the new one, or modify it significantly. There have been other incidents.

Frankly, I thought his comment was silly, as we tolerate many wide-ranging points of view here. Some people just can't handle it when people disagree with them.

It's kind of a part of the Mormon experience or attitude or something. So many of us consider ourselves Prophets, seers and revelators, and we're just shocked and appalled when everyone doesn't agree with us.

Now everyone please just say you agree with me now before I go back and edit my posts to make your subsequent responses look stupid. It's a trick I learned from a certain poster on that other board.

Have you considered sending a welcome email or private message to new members?  Some personal contact right at first might help spur more participation.

I don't think he meant you...   took me about 1/2 a minute to realize who I think he was referring to, and yeah, that individual had / has a habit of doing that in the thick of things...

Kind of reminds me of the last stanza of one of my favorite poems by the Scottish Bard, Robert Burns:

To A Louse
On Seeing One On A Lady's Bonnet, At Church

1786

Ha! whaur ye gaun, ye crowlin ferlie?
Your impudence protects you sairly;
I canna say but ye strunt rarely,
Owre gauze and lace;
Tho', faith! I fear ye dine but sparely
On sic a place.

Ye ugly, creepin, blastit wonner,
Detested, shunn'd by saunt an' sinner,
How daur ye set your fit upon her-
Sae fine a lady?
Gae somewhere else and seek your dinner
On some poor body.

Swith! in some beggar's haffet squattle;
There ye may creep, and sprawl, and sprattle,
Wi' ther kindred, jumping cattle,
In shoals and nations;
Whaur horn nor bane ne'er daur unsettle
Your thick plantations.

Now haud you there, ye're out o' sight,
Below the fatt'rels, snug and tight;
Na, faith ye yet! ye'll no be right,
Till ye've got on it-
The verra tapmost, tow'rin height
O' Miss' bonnet.

My sooth! right bauld ye set your nose out,
As plump an' grey as ony groset:
O for some rank, mercurial rozet,
Or fell, red smeddum,
I'd gie you sic a hearty dose o't,
Wad dress your droddum.

I wad na been surpris'd to spy
You on an auld wife's flainen toy;
Or aiblins some bit dubbie boy,
On's wyliecoat;
But Miss' fine Lunardi! fye!
How daur ye do't?

O Jeany, dinna toss your head,
An' set your beauties a' abread!
Ye little ken what cursed speed
The blastie's makin:
Thae winks an' finger-ends, I dread,
Are notice takin.

O wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!
It wad frae mony a blunder free us,
An' foolish notion:
What airs in dress an' gait wad lea'e us,
An' ev'n devotion!
