I was thinking recently that sometimes I paint a pretty grim picture pointing out all the stuff that is obvious to me about what's going on in this country. But I read a verse recently in my personal study that is very comforting. It is Ezekiel 7:14
14 They have blown the trumpet, even to make all ready; but none goeth to the battle: for my wrath is upon all the multitude thereof.
In other words, even though the bad guys are ready to unleash a world of hurt on us, the Lord isn't going to let them fulfill their plans. The Lord wins, and we win if we're on his side.

Arbilad, what do you make of Revelation 13: 1-10 ? It appears to me that there will be a rough 42 months ahead somewhere down the line. And D&C 45: 68-71 paints a rough scene as well. Bruce R. McConkie's 1979 General Conference statement about "nuclear holocausts that surely shall be" plus various what I call unofficial prophecies such as the ones about war attributed to the Prophet Joseph Smith by Misiah Hancock (I read it at the Church History Library recently) and to President George Albert Smith add to the picture.
There will be war, pestilence, etc, but it won't be fulfilling the bad guys plans. Yes, most major problems are engineered. But I think that their goal has been to switch us all to one world government and slavery. We'll go through really hard times, but it won't be because the bad guys are succeeding, but rather that their plans are falling apart in a spectacular way and the Lord is punishing them. Unfortunately, when the wicked are punished the righteous get fallout as well. But this verse is comforting to me because, deep down, it is offensive that such evil people have experienced such success in stealing our rights. That their plans won't come to fruition is very comforting.

John's Revelation often uses the symbolic number "thousand two hundred and threescore days" "42 months", "3.5 years", or "a time[1], times[2], and half a times[0.5]". This is in reference to the duration of the drought that Elijah causes to come on the earth when he sealed up the heavens. It is most likely not a literal number.

It's also half of 7 years, so even more symbolism there. Of course Revelation is stuffed with numerical and other symbolic references.
The mom of a family that I have been tutoring recently is a Born-Again Christian and takes this extremely literally. The kinds of discussions I have with her are quite interesting, and then we agree to disagree.
