At tithing settlement this past Sunday my wife and I were advised that both the ward and the stake fast offering funds are in the red. We were asked to double our fast offerings. Apparently our ward fund has been in the red for "some time", and the stake fund more recently.
Some time ago I had a dream that our bishop asked us for a $6K donation to the fast offering fund. I didn't dare tell him that. But I expect such requests may ocurr as things get worse economically.
I heard the same story in our stake. It was in the black until recently. So, dig deep everyone who can.

Beefche, you may have to ask. I asked because of a particular assignment I have with a family in dire straits going from bad to worse, that I felt gave me license to specifically ask about the situation. I understand that in some wards around here at least bishops are requesting members increase their fast offering.
I'll ask, but I really wouldn't be surprised if my bishop brings it up (if it's an issue). He has discussed other financial needs with me (no details, simply stating the need and my ability to contribute), so no surprises if he brings it up.

Our 5th Sunday lesson was on the church welfare program. No mention of shortages or request for more money, but they were asking us to spend more time volunteering at D.I. and donating there and such.
