Because of the recent (and ongoing) controversy, I've been thinking a lot about the definition of marriage in light of the attacks on it. To me, the institution of marriage boils down to this: it allows you to participate fully in the plan of salvation, and it allows you to bring more of HF's children into this world. For those who can't have children in this life, they can in the next, and it still allows them to participate fully in the plan of salvation. For those who aren't members of the church, marriage teaches them how to participate fully in the plan of salvation if they choose to accept the gospel at a later time. Here is a thought provoking article from Elder Packer on the subject.

What has struck me is that many of those in opposition to Prop 8 (not all, but many) are taking God out of marriage. Using religion or anything religious (God, Bible, other books regarded as scripture) are not considered valid by those who oppose prop 8.
It's obviously a fulfillment of prophesy...that the last days people will turn from God...call bad good, etc.

If you accept the premise that marriage is simply a man-made social construct that has evolved over thousands of years, gay marriage seems logical.
On the other hand, if you accept the premise that marriage was ordained of God between Adam and Eve (Man and the Mother of all living) in the garden of Eden in an immortal and spiritual state, then gay marriage is simply way out of bounds.
Now I am told that protesters are planning a 1000-3000 person prtotest near the Salt Lake Temple on Friday night. Near the holy Temple, the abode of Deity, where marriages are solemnized for eternity, where families are organized by keys of sealing.
We live in days of spiritual sifting, where the tares are being bound for the burning at the season's end. It is both great and dreadful. God's mercy will hold until justice must be meted. I personally know Latter-day Saints who truly feel the Prophet and the Apostles are wrong on this issue. I am sad for them.
That is the challenge. If they resist the Spirit of truth, how can any truths be spiritually taught? You might as well speak a foreign language.
For now, the Brethren have not asked us to withdraw from society but to be civil and saintly. We may have to endure the shame of the world, but that display of returning good for evil may touch the honest in heart.
I'm heading to temple square to kick some ass - who's with me?!?
Okay, just joking. I don't believe the "protest" was as big as the rumors. Honestly, I think when they realize the Church will not give in to pressure, they'll focus on something else.

I don't know about the protest in Salt Lake, but here's what my friend in So. California told me about the protest at the LA temple:
We have had a couple of assaults in our area and even one group of protesters surrounding a brother in his pickup at the LA temple. The frustrating part is that the news is not reporting the fact that the unruly group started pounding on his truck, rocking it back and forth and yelling obscenities. So much for the report of "peaceful protests". Well apparently the gentleman in the truck stepped out and punched one of the protesters (not too christian like I'm afraid and VERY unwise) - but it made the crowd disperse immediately. He was later arrested for assault, but so was the guy he punched. In another instance, a gay couple sic - ed their dog on a gentleman out repairing yes on 8 signs that had been vandalized. (A whole neighborhoods yes on 8 signs had been slashed). They have not been caught yet.

Okay, so what would be more "Christian" since people like to throw that word out so much? Braiding a whip and whipping the jackass? Slicing his arm off with a sword? Come on, what did they want the guy to do? Curl up in a ball and suck his thumb? Is that Christian? Do absolutely NOTHING? Is that Christian?
