To what extent will your vote for president be based on:
gospel principles?
political persuasion?
fear?
I am finding people who would like to vote for other than Obama or McCainCain, but are so fearful of Obama that they seem to be almost stampeeded into voting for McCain, in spite of their belief that he is not good for America.
My political midset at the moment is in a constant state of flux.
State 1: I have been a loyal Republican, and the Republicans are the only ones who can stop Barack Obama, who if elected will drastically push our country in the socialist direction permanently. Whereas if McCain is elected theres at least some hope that we can cut back on entitlement programs. Nobody is going to agree with all my political views so I should vote against the Democrats.
But then I think about the $700b Bailout package, and John McCains voting record. and get so disgusted with the Republicans that I then think.
State 2: The Republican party as constituted has betrayed me, and my values. They don't deserve my vote. I will take a look at the Libertarian and Constitution Parties. Even if they have no chance of winning, at least I wont be perpetuating the Republican establishment we have now, and perhaps I will have a clear conscience this election. Oh and the fact that I live in Utah means that my vote isn't going to change anything anyways.
But then I look at the Libertarian and Constitution Parties. I am turned off by the Libertarian stances on social issues. And the Constitution party turns me off with their obsession with conspiracies that I think distort your view of the world in negative ways. And both of these turn me off with their unwillingness to build a coalition that can actually get anything done. Why vote for something different from the Republican party if I disagree with just about as much with them. I then fall into depression and think
State 3: The whole political outlook is hopeless, whats the point. I might as well not vote at all.
I don't stay here very long as I try to be an optimistic person. I then decide that I have to do something, suck it up, and fall back into state 1.
I am constantly arguing with myself here. Some people don't care about political and moral issues. I am not one of thes people, and I really want to be able to live with myself with whichever decision I make. I want to vote, I don't want to vote based on fear, I don't want to vote for someone that doesn't share my principles, and I don't want to feel like I have no voice.
So Lundbaek, I appreciate you sharing your political views; I have had much more to think about. However I disagree with your implication that voting Constitution Party is the only option in order to be following Gospel Principles. I believe that the General Authorities have been clear on this.
