Criticism of Michelle Obama

Barack Obama says that he's infuriated by criticism of his wife, saying that people should debate him, not her. Yet she has made many campaign appearances for him, sometimes alone.
What do you guys think? Are candidates spouses fair game? And what about from an LDS viewpoint, where we try to criticise the incorrect action, and not the person.
I think that if she weren't campaigning for him, he'd have a stronger case. But as she is very involved in the campaign, it is important to know her views.

I think spouses should be off-limits to criticism. It gets personal too quickly and is usually irrelevant to reality.

Until they stick their own necks into the political arena as she has, then they become fair game.

I agree with this view. If she's participating in the political process, then she's fair game. That doesn't mean we should be mean or unchristlike, but why should we not discuss her views if she's actively campaigning for her husband?

During and following Bill Clinton's presidency, there were numerous reports of egregious behavoiur by Hillary Clinton, including rudeness to staff and others inside and outside the White House.

I think spouses are fair game. 'Course, I think the candidate's private life is fair game, too. But I'm weird. peace.gif

It would be interesting to revisit this topic in light of recent criticisms of Sarah Palin's husband, daughter, other children, third cousins twice removed, etc. The party that was complaining so bitterly about Michell Obama being criticized in her campaigning for her husband, is criticizing the family of Sarah Palin who, as far as I know, aren't campaigning for her.
