"The promptings of the Holy Ghost will always be sufficient for our needs if we keep to the covenant path. Our path is uphill most days, but the help we receive for the climb is literally divine." --Elaine S. Dalton
Unfortunately, there is a lot of inhumane treatment of slaughter horses and it's been quite the stir the last few years. There is now only one horse slaughterhouse left in the US and that's in Illinois. The two sides to the story are basically -- Slaughtering horses for meat is not cool. We don't eat horsemeat here, sorta' like we don't eat dog or cat meat. They are recreational companions. The other point is, there will always be unwanted horses. Horses that are humanely slaughtered are better off than those starving and neglected in someone's backyard. There should be an option for unwanted horses, just as lots of dogs are put to sleep all the time. The key I guess is "humane." Now that we have to ship horses over the border to Canada and Mexico for slaughter, the USDA has no jurisdiction over what happens there or anything. If they were in the US, theoretically they could be better monitored.
