Mitt... moving up in the polls

The attitude that has been presented (concerning anti-gun) is one of the reasons I can never vote for someone of the likes of Ron Paul, no matter how nice a person he or she may be... It matters not an ilk to me whether or not a candidate claims to stand for the Constitution or not [if] said candidate has absolutely no ability to see beyond the end of his or her nose and exercise some wisdom and long term prudence to realize that there is much more to leadership than saying my way or the highway. Those who support him have soured me against him so much, there is no way I will ever know for sure what he really stands for and if he has the ability to compromise.

The Constitution of The United States itself is also known as The Great Compromise. Everyone who were stakeholders in the creation of this law had to give and take in order to come away from the table with something that all could work with and was viable. At least that is what I remember learning in public school.

When there is no middle ground allowed or created, only polar opposites, that is the time people need to worry about loss of liberty when it comes to government, and well for that matter, group think in any community.

The Book of Mormon records that as long as the bulk of the people were righteous, the voice of the people would chose righteously when it came to government and law. I personally don't think we are to the point where the balance has tipped to there being more unrighteous people. Yet. There are many good people out there of many other denominations and faith traditions, but the fact they are not LDS does not make them "wicked". But, the more polar campaigns make things in order to paint their guy / gal as the one wearing the white hat and all his / her opponents wear the black hat not only pushes things closer to that point (IMHO), the nastiness tends to end up dehumanizing not only the candidates / political operatives / campaign workers / strategists / media, but the population as well. The more / deeper / longer it happens, the less likely we ever are to healing the rifts that campaigns create and coming together again as a unified nation. All we have to do is look at the ideologic rifts that have come about courtesy of the Clinton-ites and the Bush-ites.

We've been having the same arguments for nearly a year, and the primaries are not even here yet! I don't know that I can take another several months of it, let alone nearly a year as we go through the primaries into the general election. Look at the big picture and vote your conscience, not begrudging others the same right. And if the candidate you support does not make it, look to see who of the viable remaining candidates is worthy of your consideration. Raise up above the muck. Let's all try a little harder to avoid bad mouthing those candidates we do not agree with.

When the people are righteous, I don't think The Lord "raises up" but one good candidate for leader of a nation. Even in our personal lives, there is not always just one right answer when we go to The Lord. Just because He says "Yes" when we ask if our decision is correct doesn't necessarily mean it is the mutually exclusive "Yes" to all other possible approaches we could have come up with that we take to Him. I guess though, if you think the bulk of the people of our nation are unrighteous, then it becomes second nature to operate under a paradigm of there only being one good candidate.

the last poll.

Among Republicans, the poll shows Mitt Romney regaining a slight lead over Mike Huckabee 27 percent to 24 percent although the difference is within the poll's margin of error, making the race a virtual tie.

Re: Poncho's derailment about my avatar:

Thanks, Poncho, your daughter is obviously very cool.

Although I prefer to keep a safe distance from them, there is something intriguing about wild animals, whether they are wolves, bears, lions, hippos, penguins, or whatever.

The wolf is nothing more than a play on my name, which means shield wolf in a largely forgotten old language. I've never quite figured out what a shield wolf is, so I have imagined that it refers to a sort of watch dog, shielding the family from the dangers and evils of the world. I like the thought of that and hope that I will become equal to that role in time.

Cat, my personal opinion is that this won't last another few months. It'll all be over after Super Tuesday in February, if not earlier. The way all the primaries are bunched together now there really isn't much opportunity for a candidate to recover from an earlier weak showing as Reagan did.
So, in about a month really the two major party candidates will be decided. I don't know anyone that actively participates on this forum who is planning to vote democrat, so we'll just return to our regularly scheduled programming of whether or not it's throwing your vote away to vote Republican.

I just hope Bloomberg doesn't pull a Perot.... unless he is very liberal, and then it would be OK.

Rasmussen Reports reports that Mitt Romney topped their national poll for the first time.

While it is a statistically insignificant difference between him, McCain, and Huckabee, this is indubitably progress for Romney.

I personally don't believe polls. Or rather, I believe that polls make reality, rather than reflect it. People are more inclined to vote for a person who is polling well, believing that everyone else is voting for him too.

You know, I agree with that. Personally, it ticks me a little when they keep shoving the results of the hourly poll down our throat. Who cares? All of a sudden Huckaloser's gonna come in third in Iowa and everyone's gonna be like, "B-but ... the POLLS!"

I made a realization recently. You know all that money that candidates are raising? Most of it is spent on the media. The media love this huge influx of advertising money, so they will do anything to drag out the election, making it longer and longer. Perhaps they hype candidates so that others will have to fight back by spending more and more money.

This point has been pounded into me when I came home for a short vacation and turned on cable TV. I am so glad I don't have cable TV. They create news storeis and beat them to death. What's more, they can be addicting.

Tail wag the dog.

Yeah, I never believe polls either when they contradict what I want to hear, but in fact Rasmussen Reports were impressively accurate in predicting the last couple of elections.

These were polls conducted just before the elections, naturally. But if they are as accurate during the campaign as they are just before elections, they'll be a fairly good snapshot of current sentiments, for what they're worth.

From MSNBC:

"More than half of GOP voters said they were born again or evangelical Christians, and nearly half of them supported Huckabee, according to entrance interviews by The Associated Press and the television networks. Romney led among non-evangelical voters by 2-to-1 or more.

More than a third of Republicans said it was important to have a candidate who shared their religious beliefs, and a majority favored Huckabee. The former Arkansas governor also performed strongly among those who identified themselves as very conservative"

From Reuters

" Huckabee's upset reshaped a race where no candidate has been able to claim front-runner status.

Iowa, where a sizable bloc of religious conservatives had fueled Huckabee's rapid rise, represented perhaps the best chance for the former Arkansas governor to break through with a win. His rise has been fueled by evangelical and religious conservatives who constitute a sizable bloc in Iowa.

He will face tougher going in New Hampshire, where there are fewer evangelicals, and he has lingered well behind Romney and Arizona Sen. John McCain in polls. "

Hopefully this loss for Romney will kick his supporters to get out there in the remaining states, or we live with what we get.

I must be a spinmeister because I'm about to say........

After the New Hampshire election, even if McCain wins, it is likely that Romney's delegate count will be the highest of any candidate, since McCain was a low performer in Iowa and Huckabee will likely be a low performer in New Hampshire.

So, it would appear that professed beliefs are more important to people than actions.  If I were an evangelical, I'd have been deeply disappointed wtih Huckamuck's "I don't know much about the mormon faith, but don't mormon's believe Jesus and Satan are brothers"  cuteness.  Just injecting a prominent anti-mormon question into the public forum was bad enough, but to outright LIE about what he knows about mormons...

Then his little "I don't want to run a negative campaign" while he shows a negative ad to the press.  Hello?!  What part of "thou shalt not bear false witness" does this guy not understand?

Do evangelical christians believe that the end justifies the means?  Let's not look at a candidate's record, heaven forbid.

Yikes.

New Hampshire is a proportional state with a 10% threshhold.
