All is Hell... All is Hell...

Just because bad things are coming and bad things exist in the world, should we dwell upon them? I find such personalities insufferable and bad company. But perhaps I'm a big fat sinner to desire to spend time in the presense of intelligent optimists who seem to have realworld solutions...

(please excuse the false dichotomy, if you detect one)

I don't like hanging around negative folks or pessimists. They always reminded me of that weenie in the Aliens movie who kept say, "Game over man, game over. We're all gonna die." I prefer to fight and have hope and faith in victory and the goodness of most folks to do the right thing.

I definitely think that we should have a lot of hope. The only way to get through the problems in the world today is to have hope that the Lord is on our side and we will win. A defeatist attitude means that you are helping your enemy accomplish his goal for you. Before tackling any problem, we need to believe that the Lord will help us and that ultimately we will win.

When I think things are going bad and all is doom and gloom I like to think of the British during WWII who endured the Blitz and daily fear of defeat and subjugation to Nazi Germany. I remember the words of Churchill and how they never gave up. Their lot was much darker than ours today and yet they fought on and had hope for a brighter and better tomorrow.

I think Pres. Hinckley is a good example.  More than any other living person, he probably comprehends the evil and atrocities with which Satan and his followers ravage the world.  And yet, Pres. Hinckley unfailingly exhibits hope and joy.

The Lord commands us to be of good cheer.  The Lord commands us to fear not.  But I don't think ignorance is the Lord's recommended way to get there--I think it's faith.

I grew up in Washington state and am a fan of the sports teams. Sports teams in Seattle have traditionally performed poorly and collapsed in big games. My dad has 33 more years of disappointment than I do, which has translated into an overwhelming pessimism while watching Seattle sports and has made watching games with him excruciating. I want to have a little bit of hope, even if history says otherwise.

This is an odd part of his personality, because he is otherwise an optimistic and pleasant person.

I think the world's collective goose is already well cooked, but I still plant my cherry trees.

There is always going to be some pessimism, melancholy, heck I am sure Pres. Hinkley gets it when looking at the state of affairs in the world, but we have a brighter hope. I can't imagine how I would feel if I did not have a knowledge of a brighter day to come, and after this life.

Do the scriptures garantee that the world is worse or will be worse in our lifetime?

The Nephites had periods of great prosperity, peace and stability despite the fact they were ultimately doomed.

Could there be similar periods in our future if we don't insist that the world is all going to hell and there's nothing we can do about it?

John 14: 27
27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

I like this verse because I think we get trapped into thinking the Lord's peace is the same as the world's peace. We'll be happy once the terrorists are gone... We'll be happy when there's no war... That's just not the deal.

First the bad news.  Revelations 13:1-10 tells of a period of 1/2 hour ( 21 years I reckon) during which there will be 2 monumental dictatorships.  The first one is identified by a beast that "rises out of the sea".  I have heard both Hartman Recktor and W. Cleon Skousen suggest that was probably the North Atlantic Treaty, which sound right to me.  That was the organization that fought WW2, then developed into the United Nations, which is now gradually taking over more and more power, the new world order.  So Im watching the new world order very carefully.  I believe that was what President Benson was warning us about in the October 1988 Conference.  These are all conclusions on my part, but they fit.  So Im watching the new world order.  Will it fulfill Johns prophecy? He says it will gradually accumulate power to the point where it dominates the whole world.  According to John it will "make war with the saints" and "overcome them" with power "over all kindreds, tongues, and nations", until it is wiped out.  So it probably will get worse for a while.

Then the good news.  As the scriptures and prophets tell us, great things are right up there in the offing.

Lime jello with shredded carrots is not true, and I am free of it!

Sorry, jello with anything in it is (other than the mid-layer filling in ribbon salad) is an abomination before just about anyone with a bit of swivilized taste. wink.gif

Or-- orange jell-o with mandarin oranges and whipped cream on top?? Ahh... heavenly...

Jello with stuff on it is one thing. Jello with stuff incorporated into it's matrix is just not natural. More of that RS toddler emotional trauma stuff I guess.

We here in the east eat jello properly, not with all that nasty stuff all y'alls out west put in it. nana.gif

Or red jello with shredded apples?

Or that one salad with jello, cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, whipped cream, various and sundry??

(Although my favorite thing to do with Jello is make slush...jello, koolaid, water, pineapple juice mixed and frozen...add 7up and stick in blender. Mmmm.)

Oh, my gosh, my mom would pack her jell-o so full of stuff-- cream cheese, slivered almonds, 6 kinds of fruit, more cheese, you might find a little marble-sized amount of jell-o once every 3 or 4 bites!

Jell-o slush?? Hmm... sounds like a potential drink for the little ones with birthdays in the summer! What kind of Jell-o, or does it really matter?

We use cherry. It works best if you match the slush and koolaid flavors, but it would probably work with other types. (I wouldn't go blue raspberry or something weird with the pineapple juice, but ymmv...) Hang on, I'll look up my recipe...

You been sitting there waiting all this time? Well, lessee...

4 c. sugar
11 c. water, divided
1- 3oz. package of Jell-o
2 packages Kool-aid
juice from 2 lemons (Hahaha, like you're gonna use real lemons - about 1/3 c.)
46 oz. pineapple juice (It comes in a big can, or you can mix up frozen)
1 quart ginger ale or 7up (I use the whole 2 liters, but YMMV)

Boil sugar with 4 cups water. Remove from heat and add Jell-o and Kool-aid. Stir until disolved. Add lemon and pineapple juice with remaining 7 cups water. Freeze (in something you can chisel stuff out of). Just before serving, chop up and add soda. Whip with an electric mixer or a blender.

Yum. hungry.gif

Oh, give me land, lots of land under star - ry skies above --

Don't fence me in.

Let me ride through the wide open country that I love --

Don't fence me  in.

Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze,

And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees;

Send me off forever but I ask you please,

Don't fence me in.

How often at night when the heavens are bright
With the light of the glittering stars...
Have I stood there amazed and asked as I gazed
If their glory exceeds that of ours...

Home, home on the range...
Where the deer and the antelope play...
Where seldom is heard
A discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day...

The stars at night - are big and bright
Deep in the heart of texas.
The prairie sky - is wide and high
Deep in the heart of texas.
The sage in bloom - is like perfume
Deep in the heart of texas.
Reminds me of - the one I love
Deep in the heart of texas.
The cowboys cry - ki-yip-pie-yi
Deep in the heart of texas.
The rabbits rush - around the brush
Deep in the heart of texas.
The coyotes wail - along the trail
Deep in the heart of texas.
The doggies bawl - and bawl and bawl
Deep in the heart of texas.

Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Nighttime would find me in Rosa's cantina
Music would play and Felina would whirl

Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina
Wicked and evil while casting a spell
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden
I was in love, but in vain I could tell

One night a wild young cowboy came in
Wild as the West Texas wind
Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing
With wicked Felina, the girl that I loved

So in anger I challenged his right
for the love of this maiden
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore
My challenge was answered in less than a heartbeat
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor

Just for a moment I stood there In silence
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done
Many thoughts raced
through my mind as I stood there
I had but one chance and that was to run

Out through the back door of Rosa's I ran
Out where the horses were tied
I caught a good one, it looked like it could run
Up on its back and away I did ride
Just as fast as I could from the
West Texas town of El Paso
Out to the badlands of New Mexico

Back in El Paso my life would be worthless
Everything's gone; in life nothing is left
It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden
My love is stronger than my fear of death

I saddled up and away I did go
Riding alone in the dark
Maybe tomorrow a bullet will find me
Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart
And at last here I am on the hill overlooking El Paso
I can see Rosa's Cantina below
My love is strong and it pushes me onward
Down off the hill to Felina I go

It's a great song. I like it because it sounds like a good cowboy song and it tells a story that's interesting. I always thought that he could do better than the wicked Felina.

My parents luuuuuuved that song and my mom would holler out this harmony in the car... 8-track tapes way back when... I always thought the guy himself died! Wait a minute- lemme read those words again...

Okay, I've had the story wrong all the way until this very moment. He killed another guy and now he's going BACK for the stripper??? I mean, the whirler? Wow, this guy's got it bad. Marty Robbins clap.gif

I may request that this is played at my funeral-- smile.gif

An old cowboy went riding out one dark and windy day
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw
A-plowing through the ragged sky and up the cloudy draw

Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel
Their horns were black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky
For he saw the Riders coming hard and he heard their mournful cry

Yippie yi Ohhhhh
Yippie yi yaaaaay
Ghost Riders in the sky

Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, their shirts all soaked with sweat
He's riding hard to catch that herd, but he ain't caught 'em yet
'Cause they've got to ride forever on that range up in the sky
On horses snorting fire
As they ride on hear their cry

As the riders loped on by him he heard one call his name
If you want to save your soul from Hell a-riding on our range
Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will ride
Trying to catch the Devil's herd, across these endless skies

Yippie yi Ohhhhh
Yippie yi Yaaaaay

Ghost Riders in the sky
Ghost Riders in the sky
Ghost Riders in the sky

No it didn't... things just changed to talking about things that were as bad as hell... jello with shredded stuff in it.

Now, the singing of the western cowboy type songs is just a way of dealing with pessimism... and nasty corrupted jello molds by RS cookbooks and the women who create them... biggrin.gif
