Global warming causes forest fires?

I heard on talk radio this morning that they are now saying that global warming causes forest fires. This is malarky (to borrow Mahonri's favorite word). Besides the fact that global warming does not exist, there are several problems with this theory.
First, even the most rabid global warming advocates don't claim that the average temperature has risen more than a couple of degrees. That isn't nearly hot enough to cause forest fires on its own. I don't know what the flash point of a dried out bush is, but the flash point of paper is 451 degrees fahrenheit. A temperature rise of a couple of degrees is clearly insufficient to get dried underbrush anywhere near to the point of autoignition.
Heat can be a contributing factor to forest fires by drying the forest out first. But they call it "global warming" because they believe that it is happening globally. Increased heat results in increased evaporation of oceans, and thus increased rainfall. If global warming were real, it would result in more actual rainfall, thus making forests wetter.
Global warming is attributed to mad made emissions of carbon dioxide. Plants absolutely love carbon dioxide. The more they get, the better they grow and the healthier they are. A healthy forest is harder to set ablaze, because a healthy tree will not burn well or at all until you already have a conflaguration well going and established. So, if increased levels of carbon dioxide are heating things up, the trees will be healthier and harder to set ablaze.
A basic understanding of science is all that's needed to see that it is ludicrous to claim that global warming is causing increased forest fires.
One of the reasons we've had so many forest fires is government mismanagement of public land. A certain number of fires are actually good for a forest in order to clear out dead undergrowth. But they try to stop all fires. That means that a huge amount of dry undergrowth is built up. When a fire does get started, it gets hot really quickly and thus is more able to attack the healthy trees.
Basically, the environmentalist policies are causing more forest fires. So they explain it away with junk science by saying that global warming is causing it, so that they don't have to admit that they're wrong.

I also blame global warming for my short term memory loss!

Arb is right on. It seems that as the new religion of environmentalism grows bigger and bigger, the things to blame global warming on increases at the same rate. Arb's also right on about mismanagment of forests causing much of the problem. We have these big forest fires in California destroying thousands of homes. These fires are nothing new, what is new is that there are homes in those areas. What is also new is that it takes an act of congress to remove a tree or brush near your home. The brush and dead old growth goes right up to their back yards. When I was a kid I can remember my grandfather burning brush around his ranch all the time. Now it takes 4 years of waiting for permission from the forest service and a mountain of papers to get permission to burn so no one does it. In a drought year like we are having now, the western U.S. is basically a tinder box. But let's blame global warming and bow at the idol of environmentalism.

A few years ago I loved to joke when we had exceptionally cold weather that it was due to global warming. I thought that this was funny because a warming trend shouldn't cause exceptionally cold weather. Then the environmental movement started making that claim, and I stopped joking about it. I'd be careful with your jokes, Cat, or the environmental movement will start claiming that global warming causes freezer burn

NEWS FLASH: ATHLETES FOOT CAUSED BY GLOBAL WARMING

Ever feel that burning sensation in your foot? Could be global warming. A new study put out by the Scientific community puts forth the theory that the next itching and burning you feel after playing basketball could be because the U.S. didn't sign on to Kyoto.

"It's really simple," Said Ivan Id Iota of the Global Climate Conference. "Global warming causes glaciers to melt which means more water is in the air and in areas that were formerly dry. Funguses like athletes foot need a warm moist environment. As the earth gets warmer and more moist, you will see more cases of athletes foot and it's more sinister netherregion stepsister Jock Rot."

House Speak Nancy Pelosi has called for hearings on the problem and has blamed the Bush Administration for not caring about the working poor forced to live with these funguses. "What we are seeing here is the systematic abuse of a whole population based on their race, immigration status, and poverty level by an uncaring, unfocused Bush Administration more concerned with fighting a losing war than in saving the planet from the horrors of global warming," commented Pelosi. "But there is a new congress in town and we will work hard to save the planet. Our first step will be to roll back the Bush Adminstrations tax cuts for the rich and use that money to fund grants to encourage cleaning up the environment." Pelosi plans to introduce legislation that she says, "will force the president to choose between the deaths of our young men and women in a war we cannot win or the deaths of our men and women to the real and looming threat caused by global warming."

When I see people like Bill Clinton, Al Gore, George Bush, Kofi Annan, John McCain, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sun Myung Moon,  Mikhail Gorbachev, and Barbara Streisand championong the global warming hogwash, I understand better the purpose of the scare.

The temperature of the Earth has always gone up and down. It may be that the Earth is warming up, however I haven't seen enough evidence to convince me that it comes from CO2 emmited from people. A single volcanic eruption can put the entire history of mankind to shame when it comes to CO2 emmisions. More likely it comes from the varibility of the suns energy output.

If the earth is heating up, there isn't anything we can do about it. It is just being used as an excuse for government to control more of our lives.

Celebrities and many politicians believe what the media puts out on global warming without investing any of their own effort to get the facts.  Its the lazy way to participate as a "concerned" citizen.

Tyro, who has appeared here in the past and used to be a regular at Nauvoo but is now primarily a blogger had a good post on one of her blogs (March 24) about a speech from Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK).  He has been vocal about global warming hysteria and even has an extensive Skeptic's Guide (PDF File) on debunking global warming hysteria.

I gave up on the Rendezvous with Rama series at the point where it became a proselyting tract for environmentalism and global warming. It is upsetting that the media is so blatantly biased towards global warming now. So much for critical thinking.

Note, the article states that things will have warmed up to the point the oceans will boil away and that our solar system will get pushed to 4 times the current distance from the galactic center than we already are!
