I think that everyone who posts here is in the US (although certain members are in a state that doesn't recognize daylight savings time), so this announcement should be helpful for most. Daylight Savings time will start this Sunday this year.

Many computers have been patched. But many systems have not been, such as authentication systems. They depend on the time on both computers in the transaction to be the same. If they're off, it won't authenticate. What system administrators will have to do for those computers for which patches aren't available is manually set the time forward on Sunday, then manually set it back in April when it sets itself forward automatically. It has the potential to do stuff like Y2K did - sometimes credit card authorizations won't work, or stuff like that. But you don't need to be heading for the hills to live in your quonset hut just yet.

so.... how do I know if my computer is all set or not? I have WinXP -- I assume that it has automatically downloaded whatever patch it needs. Is that right?
It should have. The mainstream operating systems - Windows and Mac - should have no problems. It's mainly computers that are either no longer supported at all or are poorly supported. Plus, IT personnel being human beings, even if a patch exists there will be cases where the IT person simply forgot to apply it. But, if your system isn't up to date, the worst that will happen is that certain websites won't play nicely with your computer until you manually set the time ahead.

Yeah, Congress, in all their wisdom (all one teaspoonful of it), decided that they wanted to force people to conserve energy by extending daylight slavings time. They didn't stop to consider how much of a hassle it would cause.

That's why they should be neutered! That and the only other prescription is more cow bell!
Cat Herder wrote: Where are the studies that prove that daylight savings time actually saves energy?
As part of the change, congress also set aside $1.5 mil to answer that question. If it doesn't, then we'll switch back, costing the economy another several million dollars which should offset any savings very nicely.

Don't you guys remember way back in the early '70's when Nixon first took us onto DST? It would seem to me there would have been some studies from way back then to "prove" it. But, maybe those got lost in the Watergate stuff... I mean, they didn't even reference it in Forrest, Forrest Gump.
Is it just me, or does anyone else not get Jason's reference to needing more cow bell here of late? You haven't been developing a new product to compete with our tomacolate now have you?

I think it's great that General Conference times won't change for us... Saturday to Sunday as in the past.
So Happy I live in AZ where we don't have DST and the clocks never move.

Do you have Sleestacks and dinosaurs and rivers in caves that if you go rafting with your father and sister on you'll get lost and end up in the Cretaceous period? Oh wait, that was The Land of The Lost...

Ah, great show. I've been renting it on DVD and watching with my kids. I never noticed all the subtle drug references though when I was a kid.
I went to church an hour late, despite the many warnings... Talk about embarrassing... Our family DOESN'T make such mistakes! We were tempted to go innactive, rather than face the self-righteous mocking of the members who remembered Congress's arbitrary dinking with all our schedules, but we persisted and found that we could laugh with ourselves once we got over ourselves...
My computer is still an hour behind... Grrrr...

Actually, our ward was very good; most people showed up on time.

Well, technically poo crystals are a salt, chemically speaking, so that makes arbi salt too!
We forgot to set our clocks ahead an hour, so we were like the only family who had the guts to show up to church 45 minutes late (had to since wife is librarian and I was substituting for a substitute primary teacher who couldn't make it to the class she had agreed to substitute)...
We hid in the library until the rest of Sacrament meeting was over...

For some reason, for the past month or so, we have had a hard time making it to church on time anyway. So this Sunday, when we got there AN HOUR LATE, we consoled ourselves that we would have been on time if it weren't for the time change.

Yes, actually. We do. Would you like to book a tour?
*gets out form for taking credit card number*
My sister-in-law in Utah was an hour late Sunday...big bummer for her since she was supposed to perform a musical number she'd been practicing all week.
