Demise of Deseret Towers underway now...

For those of you who ever lived in DT at BYU, well, their life (meaning DT, not those of us who lived there... sheesh... ) is indeed now at an end (or soon will be).

http://magazine.byu.edu/issues/100/1924/files/DT_HD.mov

SPOILER ALERT:
This shows V-hall being torn down. W-hall (the one I called home my Freshman Year at the Y) ostensibly was demolished prior to this time lapse photo display. Living on the side of W-hall that faced V-hall, I do admit I felt a kind of sick sort of satisfaction at watching the walls, windows, and rooms of the "nemesis" dorm meeting the claws of death...

So, do you think BYU will replace the old DT with some new high rise apartment complexes for oncampus housing?

Well, we can now see that there is a limit to the number of characters that can be included in the options for a poll...

To finish those that got cut off at the end:
#9 ...uys/gals were cute enough to spend time visiting...
#11 ...w ground levels of the HFAC, Art Museum, Wilkinson Center, and HBLL...

BTW, I had to edit your post to reattach the poll. I hope you don't mind.

Huh?  Now I can't even vote in my own poll

Obviously, you must have been one of those honors guys over in V-hall...

I still see the poll. It's acting really odd today, though.

As a graduate of the FIRST university started by Brigham Young, I'm not too fond of the Y... although my wife did graduate there and we have a happy mixed marriage.

True men (like me) lived in Heritage, where we cooked for ourselves and where the female-to-male ratio was at least 4-to-1 for student wards, home evening groups, etc--until they changed the stake and ward boundaries to even out that ratio by including slackers from DT.

Heritage girls rocked!  They would cook for their poor starving home evening bros on a regular basis

Well, Ray, that explains a lot about your obnoxiousiosity...  you never were able to behave like a freshman in the dorms, so now 20 years later, you are still seeking that outlet...

Shiz, pray tell, you weren't a V-Hall nerd?!  What year?  Me?  W-Hall  Fall '84 - Winter '85...  Wouldn't that be funny (in a scarey ironic sort of way ) if you were one of those guys on the south side of V-Hall the guys on W-5th floor (north side of building) exchanged the occasional broadsides with...  Yes, I am proud of my dorm floor... we had some pretty rowdy guys.  We went through an RA, and we went through a dorm mother... all before Christmas break...

Roper, you were a girly-man who lived down in Heritage?  (Obviously before your Chuck Norris stunt double days...)  See up in DT, we got the benefit of being in a ward where our female contingent was from Heritage, so the ratio was 3 girls for every 1 guy and we also got the advantage of the proximity of all the DT girls!  Ah... it was sweet being the ward membership clerk...   The only problem with having FHE sisters from Heritage was listening to them pine for their missionaries on a nearly daily basis...

Does staying in them during EFY count?  I went to EFY for four years back in the day.  Stayed in Helaman Halls for three and Deseret Towers for one.  I thought the DT was like a hotel compared to Helaman Halls.  Of course that was a few years back.

I never lived there, but I always heard of DT referred to as Delerium Tremens.

Cat, you forget that you have a few years on me.

But yes, I got to look at W Hall all during my Freshman year there.  But in my day, they had sealed the windows shut, so you couldn't throw stuff out of them anymore.    We heard about that stuff.

Though I do believe that some guys in W found a way to get on the roof and threw stuff from there....

Probably one too many people fell / jumped out a window... those things were scarey in W hall... big old windows hinged in the center of the window, that you could get spinning if lose enough.  You could rotate them open completely in my day.  Great for letting in fresh air until they would lock them for the winter months.

From what I understand, great for launching things from all the way back by the door to dong the sun shades on V-Hall... (Who me?  Honest, it was my neighbor who tossed that piece of apple that missed the sun shade and went into the room one story down through the slightly cracked window, bounced off the desk and landed in the open closet where a whole passle of V-hall nerds were congregated talking nerd talk... Just because I and my room mate were in the room from whence the apple came does not make us guilty by association or accomplices...  besides, the sling shot powered lemon drops that came back at us for the next several hours could have put an eye out!)

Did you guys ever use pennies to "lock" people in their dorm rooms?  I pennied one guy in his room so bad he couldn't get out and was banging on the door calling for help.  I used to love doing that.

I also liked taking coat hangers and pushing their drawers out in the middle of the night and scaring the heck out of them especially since some folks never figure out how to get the drawers off.  I had one guy who just left his drawers pulled out all the time because he got tired of having them come slamming out in the middle of the night.

One time we decided to see how many guys we could get in the elevator at DT.  We overloaded it and it opened between floors.  We had all big linebacker size guys just packed in their.  Good times and a mispent youth to boot!

Jason, you sure you weren't on my dorm floor the year I lived there?

One guy two or three doors down from us got pennied in so bad one time early in the fall that the door was starting to split.  I kid you not, the guys who did it must have had like 4 or 5 pennies and a couple nickels and quarters in there too.  And then they "stole" the pizza that was delivered to the room but which the guy in the room couldn't open the door to pay the delivery guy for.  They took it all out of the box, took a piece and poured foot powder on it and shoved it under the door, which got the kid screaming even louder (the guy had the most annoying whiney scream, and that was what was so funny for the rest of the guys on the floor, as he was one of the rowdiest kids on the floor, so it was kind of pay back... you know, kind of like the wicked killing the wicked, except it was a rowdy pennying in a rowdy).  Of course, by the time we all started hearing the door crack, the RA decided it was enough and made them take the coins out to the point the kid could free himself.

And, it was routine for some n'erdowells to open up the elevator door between floors, climb out and just leave it stuck there until someone else would climb in and close the doors so it would go again.

It always was the annoying ones that got pennied in.  We pennied one in so bad that the RA had to use a coat hanger to dig the pennies out and threatened all of us that we would have to pay for damages blah, blah, blah, tune out rant, blah, blah, blah.  I remember one night guys were playing tackle football in the halls at 3 am.  That was cool.

One time my buddy and I decided to play a gag so we went and photocopied one side of a five dollar bill and cut them out.  Then we would age them by crumpling them up and puting them in the dirt.  On the blank side we would write little messages like, "You scrounge, now you can buy that Barbie book you've been dreaming about".  We would then put them around the dorm building in dark areas where when you saw it you would think it was real money.  Outside the dorms by the bushes worked well and in the hallways and lobby in the evening.  Then we would watch people almost trip over themselves trying to get to the fake money and then get all miffed and throw it after they read the special message.  Gosh, all this reminicsing is fun!

I was a Q-hall boy.

I really LIKED the food at the Morris Center. I enjoyed most of my experiences at DT. Good times.

I was a nerdy T-hall girl! At least I think it was T-hall. We went to church with V-hall people and I was on the 2nd floor with all the giganerds.

This was fall of '87. Then I made an interesting discovery...

Def Leppard

At the Christmas break, a friend and I moved down to Helaman Halls - May Hall, who went to church with the jocks in John Hall. biggrin And yeah, if you were walking to the Marriott, that was me dancing in the window to Pour Some Sugar On Me.... HA!

I was serving a mission in 87, so that probably makes us about the same age, and probably means we have similar tastes in music.  I noticed you were the only one who seemed to get the Timbuk 3 reference on Bright Future thread wink

Tangentially, I think the death of Randy Rhoades at age 25 was one of the most significant losses in music.  He was like a cross between Eddie and Yngwie, studied classical guitar, and played metal like nobody before or since.  Maybe we should start a Randy tribute thread

Woohoo!  I lived in Heritage for 2 years--one as a peon, one as an RA.  Bwahahahahaha!

But I always had baked treats in the kitchen for any of the guys who came to visit.  We regularly hosted dinners too.

As for the poll, I could have happily voted for #5, 11, or 12.

Yes, the rock music thang stayed with me a while and I still like it. Maybe I'm not "that" into Randy Rhoads, but I like The Edge (U2) and Eddie Van Halen just as much. Never liked Ozzy. He was just TOO MUCH for me. Killing puppies and stuff. No thanks.

I remember when my friend and went to Disneyland for spring break '89. (This was after freshman year at the Y and I had transferred to the UofU biggrin)  I was really into Guns N Roses at the time.  I saw this person with a GNR t-shirt on and it made me sick the rest of the day.  Practically ruined everything.   It still comes into my head when I'm trying to enjoy a song of thiers on the radio.

Heritage, huh?  Man, I'da starved if I'da lived there.  I hadn't taken up cooking at that point.  I didn't mind the Morris or Cannon center food, either.  They tasted quite a bit alike, actually.  euph- the way to a man's heart is through his stomach?    he he

I'm assuming euph, that you're at least 8 years younger than I I'm class of '87.

eta- And just in case you're wondering, I CHOSE to go to the U, there wasn't any scandalous stuff involved.  Left on my mission the day before I turned 21. biggrin
