I applaud Michigan voters who, following similar successes in Texas and California, passed a ban on using race and gender preferences in public university admissions and in government hiring and contracting. Of course, the University of Michigan is mounting legal challenges. I hope the the ban sticks.
I think it's interesting, however, that measures like these are passing now that white males have become a minority on college campuses.

We passed this many years ago in California. All the doom and gloom prophets predicted catastrophy statewide and that our college compusses would become all white and male. It hasn't happened. Of course, they also point out that we have now too many Asian's in our best universities. I guess Asians don't count as minorities.
I'm all for it. I think that affirmative action is counterproductive. If you set expectations low, you will get low performance. Affirmative action sets the expectations for minorities low, so those groups don't typically perform up to their potential.

Affirmative action is, at its core, racist. It implies that someone with non-white skin should meet a lower standard of consideration because he or she can't compete at the same level.

But if you point that out then you are called a racist! I love America!
Heard on the news this morning on the way back from Seminary / dropping daughter off at high school that Michigan's Attorney General is about to start proceedings against the Governor and the three big schools here in Michigan that are holding out against dropping the affirmative action rules they support, despite the voters in Michigan clearly passing the proposal to repeal affirmative action in college admissions. Should be fun to see Governor Granholm crash and burn...
Hey, what is up with the new looke to the comment posting window?

Yeah, I hate the way the comment window appears now too. But on certain browser/OS combinations, it's always appeared that way. I guess they figured out how to display the "improved" version on all browsers. Personally I preferred the old way. It seemed to be easier to use and have more functionality.
