Terrorism Watch for 2007

I don't know how familiar any of you are with Glenn Beck, but here was a short yet disconcerting article on his website under "The Real Story".  What do you all think?

Very familiar with Mr. Beck and I also found this piece interesting.

Did read it, does it have something to do with Pat Robertson's predictions?

Yes and No.  On his show, he brought up Pat Robertson's predictions and examined them in a satirical light. Next he asked listeners to call in with specific 2007 predictions.  Some were silly. some were hunches.  But one fellow called in with some correlating information about Phoenix as a potentail target for terrorism and it got Glenn thinking "hmmmm..".  Glenn did some research and confirmed the strange coincidences and promised to "keep an eye on Phoenix".

Three perspectives:

1)  When I was still in the Air Force, I served as our unit's representative on the Threat Working Group--a group made up of stakeholders in base and community security.  Every week, we examined dozens of classified reports similar to the ones referenced by Glenn, and looked for patterns.  My experience was that you could always tie enough of them together to raise the alarm, and the base commander had the unenviable job of deciding which links were credible and required action, and which analyses leaned a little too far toward conspiracy theory.  The amount of information available, combined with hyper-cautious analysis after 9/11, usually led to paraniod security measures, which led to decreased response (crying wolf too many times.)

2)  On the other hand, part of the reason the attacks of 9/11 were successful is this:  Hyper-cautious analysis of the amount of information available should have raised the alarm, but decision-makers were too afraid of crying wolf, and dismissed much of the analysis as so much conspiracy theory.  Bottom line:  Terrorism is a double bind for intelligence.

3)  The phoenix is a bird from Egyptian mythology--a sacred firebird of the Arabian peninsula that martyrs itself in a glorious conflagration then arises renewed and beautiful.  Terrorists specifically plan their actions to be symbolic.

The whole summer? Gee, I had a week or so planned...

Guess that means I should follow the prophet or something and get the rest of my food storage in order.

Oh no, four days is all.  I'll be working full-time for the rest of the summer (I'm a full time student in the fall and spring).  I plan on re-augmenting our savings and I'd like to paint our house this summer.  We'll see what happens.

As a former Geology major (finished my BS with a Geology minor), if Yellowstone blows, terrorism will be the least of anyone's worries across the globe... some Geologists that specialize in volcanology theorize that it would be as ultimately devastating as the event that killed the dinosaurs.

How's that little song go?  'When the log rolls over, we'll all be dead...'

Cat, I had an ecology class at Ricks.  We spent four weeks on Yellowstone, and had a couple of class overnight horseback trips there.  I learned the same thing:  The extent of the underground thermal systems in Yellowstone, if raised to volcanic activity, would cover the Northwest in lava and pump enough ash and gasses into the atmosphere to severely disrupt global weather.

When I was in scouts, our troop did a 50-miler in Yellowstone.  On our longest day, we hiked about 14 miles.  At the end of the day, we stopped near a pretty little stream and removed our shoes to soak our sore feet in the cool water.  Ouch!  The water in that pretty little stream was scalding!  We hiked about 200 yds upstream and found the source--a pretty little bubbling pool with the occasional pretty little geyser. I love Yellowstone!
