I heard on the radio this morning that Barack Obama is actually half white. He was raised by his white mother after his father left them. So, why does he self-identify as black? Because it's politically expedient of course. So, in your opinion, is it appropriate to use race for political gain? In my opinion encouraging stuff like that means that you'll have incidents like you did with Ward Churchill, who claims to be an indian, but is really a white guy.

It's because black skin is dominant. He IS black. Sure, only half, but that's a technicality. I think there aren't very many 100% African blacks anymore, anyway.

Well, in his case his father is originally from Kenya, so he comes close. I guess what I'm saying is that, if blacks were still terribly discriminated against in our country, wouldn't he do his best to make it appear as if he were just a dark skinned white man?

Well, there is probably a fair amount of racial mingling in just about any ethnic group these days here in the US... why even us Mormons (see other thread I started where they radio talk show guy called us Mormon-Americans) have the odd Gentile who has married into the gene pool.
I think in Africa, there are still a fairly high % of African individuals who have dark complexions and would therefore count as "100% African blacks."

Good question. There was one ward I was in a long time ago that had a sister from South Africa in it. She was white. Guess it would depend on what they consider themselves... an Afrikaans-American?
How about a member of the church who is African-American with some Irish and Afrikaans ancestry immigrated to South Africa and became a citizen? An African-Irish-Mormon-American-Afrikanner-South African...
