Technical difficulties

This isn't about moderating, but I don't know where else to put it.

I am having trouble viewing the "Disciplining Kids" thread in General discussions. When I click on it, sometimes it doesn't load completely. I just posted there, but I can't view my own post.

Does anyone else have trouble with this? This is the only thread I've experienced this problem with.

Not exactly that one, but depending on the computer I'm using to access Bountiful, sometimes it seems like when I hit the back button, it brings up a cached view from weeks ago, so I have to reload the page so it shows up correctly. Maybe there is a correlation? Your web cache doesn't include the thread you are linking to, so it comes up as empty since it didn't exist at the time your browser last cached the page?

I've had the same caching problem with the back button.  Occasionally on Nauvoo as well.  If I hit the Bountiful link that's always on the upper left, it always loads correctly.

Here is another unrelated tech glitch I seem to be having: I have sent emails thru Bountiful and they seem to never be recieved. I have sent two emails to CatHerder... did you get them? I sent one to Jeffrey way back when, but got no reply. Now I am wondering if it was never delivered.

bok,

Don't know if I got them or not. When were they sent? I'll need to check my e-mail. I've been having some issues with e-mail recently, as my ISP sold all their customers to another ISP and, well, the transition has not been smooth like they promised the new ISP it would be (dorks didn't even bother to have the decency to tell their customers they were getting out of the business... their customers' first notice was the note from the new ISP informing them that starting within 24 hours of that notice, they would have to adjust their settings to reflect the new path). I too have tried sending a couple messages to Jeffery from the forum tool, but haven't received a response, so maybe there is something up with the e-mailing functionality...

Cat, I'd guess the first one was sent over a month ago. The most recent would have been two weeks or so...

No worries. I guess I'll try emailing someone else to see if it works or not.

Not that I can do anything about it this month, or probably the next, but do you guys think that it's time to move to a new server? It would involve a lot of effort on my part, such as moving all the threads (if it's even possible), setting everyone up as users on the new server, you guys setting up your preferences again, getting everyone pointed to the new url, etc. It would be a lot of effort.
What would we gain? Hopefully stability. Activeboard seems to be very quirky, and it seemed like it was down for a long time today. Plus, there are constant glitches, such as posts getting lost. It would also be possible to have a nice url, such as www.thosecrazybountifulpeople.com, whereas here it would be prohibitively expensive (I forget what they charge a month for the privilege of pointing your domain at their server, but it's a lot).

I would say that would need to be your call, arbilad. You're the one in control of all the technical side of things. What would happen to the money people had paid in advance to help keep things ad free here on Activeboard? Would they refund any unused balance to them or to the forum at least?

I guess the best thing would be to get all the details together of the costs involved, put together a plan including the risks and benefits, and present it to the body for discussion.

We will need to have a plethora of emoticons.

I would suspect my recent problems are just as likely to come from my computer as from activeboard. How many posts have been dropped, Arb? I had one that I "thought" I had posted but it didn't appear, but I may have just hit the back button instead of the "submit" button, or something.

My previous problem of the thread not loading seems to have resolved itself. But then, I'm on a different computer today, too.

If I were the one making the decision, I wouldn't move, at least not yet. But then I'm lazy, and wouldn't want to deal with the hassle of moving everything. I think we would lose some folks too, particularly the occasional people.

We need to get some exposure, somehow. There's really not enough traffic here to be interesting, most of the time. Are there other LDS forums where we could "advertise" to attract more members?

Very good question, Bok. I don't know the answer. One of my very weakest skills is how to draw attention to a new venture or undertaking.
I do know that there was a time, a few years back, when Nauvoo felt like a ghost town. I'd say their traffic was about comparable to ours right now. But they also had a famous author as their sponsor, so that makes a big difference. I'm neither famous, nor likely to become so.

Well, maybe between Ray, you, me, and any of the others who have entered the Bean Leaf contest, we can create the cumulative effect of one famous writer.

Would it help to say I have a handwritten, personalized post card that was sent to me by the former US Poet Lauereate thanking me for writing him?

Actually, I think one of our finest "selling" points is that we do not have a celebrity as the focal point of the forum.  We are The People {patriotic music starts playing, much like whenever Oliver Douglas would start speaking on Green Acres}, we can build this forum to great things by the sweat of our own brow... planting seeds of wonderous discussion in the fertile soil of the virgin internet earth... watching the fruits of our labor grow and become quite Bountiful... {everyone is wondering where the music is coming from}
