 Thanks, Jason. I'll be sharing those with fellow students in my "special populations and diverse settings" class next Tuesday. I pretty much hate that class because of the intolerance of the PC crowd. And I've already got an A based on the projects I have submitted.
Sadly, those situations are not too far from reality. Two weeks ago, I spent my planning period with a third-grader from another class who was on detention for the entire day. At a carnival, he had won a keychain with a drilled-out empty .45 casing attached. He was showing it to some friends, when a teacher saw it and reported him for bringing a "weapon" to school. So I received the pleasant task of role-playing with him alternate decisions about what is appropriate to bring to school.

You have to share some of that role playing stuff. Sounds hillarious! I used to bring my pocket knife to highschool and didn't really worry about it. I drove by the stables on the way to seminary and had to feed the sheep. I used the knife to cut open feed sack and hay bales. I also had ammo in my car. I also didn't sit really still in elementary school and even got the paddle once from the teacher for lying. Today I would have ended up in Juvenile Hall loopy on mood altering drugs.
I learned in Nauvoo today that I abuse my children because I sent one to her room for most of the day, and when it was lunchtime I had the audacity to suggest she only be allowed to have a slice of bread.
This thread kinda reminded me of that one... both would be kinda funny if they weren't so sad...

Yeah, Ray, I was sorry to see that thread take such a turn. Twice, in non-confrontational ways, I tried to get people to back off on the judgemental comments, but I think I was largely ignored. Folks seemed intent on passing judgment and then getting all defensive when others called them on it. And then someone tried to make it into a gender-biased issue. It all reminded me of the office dynamics when I used to work for the city's health department.
I'm interested, though, why you posted that in the first place.

I didn't see that, but I was just lurkseeing... not going into depth at looking at each individual post... wouldn't surprise me a bit if there was some of it hidden underneath though.

Ray, your child will live and hopefully learned something. I already commented on this in the other topic on this forum. Unless you are living in third world Africa your child will be fine. The U.S. navy puts people on bread and water still to this day. If the government can do that to adults for days at a time, I think your child will be fine. Sometimes children can get out of control and it takes something serious to get their attention. I have heard and read from parents with out of control teens who took the door off the hinges, took everything out of their rooms, and left them with one matress, one blanket, and two sets of plain clothes (T-shirt ,blue jeans, socks, undies. One to wash and one to wear), one plain coat if it was cold outside, and one pair of plain bargain basement shoes. Some people thought it was cruel but these out of control teens after a few days of living like this had profound changes in their attitudes. Behavior and school work improved and nearly all thanked their parents. Sometimes tough love has to be tough. Maybe I'm strange being raised and still living on a farm without the malls and glitzy city life but a little well focused discipline never hurt anyone. If my parents hadn't been tough on me when I deserved it, then I would have turned out very different.
Actually I posted my comments hoping folks would share their comments on how they help their children deal with overindulgence... It was mostly one of those slice of life type posts I do... I've posted about Hannah's antics throughout my history with Nauvoo... I suppose I made the mistake of thinking that this post would have the benefit of the context of past posts.
I have said many times that I am mostly naive to the wicked ways of the world. I am always surprised by the "problems" that some people carry around with them... and see in everyone.
Kinda sad, really...
Or heck, maybe I was abused as a child when I was "grounded" for some reason or another...

Proper discipline at the age of four will very likely eliminate extreme discipline during teenage years. A child who does not learn to respect her parents as a child will be a hellion as a teenager. I think you did right, Ray. I didn't post that on Nauvoo, because like Roper, I would have been ignored, or worse.
