Apples to Apples

In the same spirit as the question(s) I placed concerning the Settlers of Cataan game, what do you all think of this game?  I know nothing about it other than having seen it at Target and Glenn Beck advertises it on his show.

Anyone ever play it?  What is it like?  Is it worth the moolah?

I know nothing about it personally, again other than Glenn Beck advertises it. You get the impression from his ads that Apples to Apples can cure cancer AND take out the trash. I'll be interested in seeing the responses to this, because we need to pick up another board game or two.

I have no clue about this game either.  One thing's for certain though.  Way too many of us are watching Glen Beck! Must be a mental disorder!  Who knew that nerdy looking guy had such a following but his show is great! LOL

...who's Glen Beck?

Maybe I'm aging myself. Or it could be that I don't watch tv. Anyway, I love Apples to Apples! Here's how it goes:

Everybody has a hand of cards. This hand will have cards such as "Marylyn Monroe", "My first kiss", "Martha Stewart", "The 20's", etc (if I had a copy of the game I could give you better options, but basically cards that have a person, an idea, an era, an event...a noun pretty much).

One person (the judge of the round, which rotates through all of the players) draws from the adjective pile, which will have a word such as "Explosive", "Sexy", "Genius", etc.

The players (minus the judge) then all place a card from their hand face-down on the table.

The cards get on the table then get mixed up, and the judge decides which card he likes best to go with the adjective. The players can place any card down, but the object is to place the card down that the judge will like best, so that they can win the round. Basically, you play to the judge. If the judge will like a funny answer, go for funny. Heck, I even got my dad to choose "Brad Pitt" for "Sexy".

I think the game is loads of fun, but it really depends who you are playing with. Younger kids may have a hard time with it, as they would need to have an idea of what the noun cards mean, and they may not have a fully developed sense of irony or sarcasm, which makes the game much more fun.

Some people say that the game is really luck of the draw--if you have a good card you are lucky. However, there is wit to it and trying to guess where you should place your card based on the judge. The thing I like about it is that my siblings will actually play it with me as opposed to almost any other game (although I've been introducing Canasta and have my dad and brother into it, but not my mom or sister). And that's only when I actually go home.

Anyway, Apples to Apples I totally give two thumbs up. Just find a fun group to play with and the game can last hours and cause a lot of laughs.

It's a very fun party game. I end up laughing hysterically almost every time I win.

Hint: Save either the Canada card or the Michael Jackson card for the description Scary. It works most of the time.

Apples to Apples

I got this one years ago, have tons of expansion packs too. It's fun to play with kids, and it's a great game because it easily expands to many players...

The game is really simple, to learn, to play... and everyone gets a chance to play it.

Our family has had it for a little over a year and we enjoy it. It's amazing to see who wins most of the time... and it ain't me!

I received Apples to Apples as a gift before it was available in mainstream stores like Target.  My brother's girlfriend worked in a cute and quirky toy shop and I'm sure played a major role in my brother giving it to me.  It's a fun game and very different from most other games you tend to see.

It works really well in larger groups.  I like it as a getting to know people activity.  You can kind of see how they think, etc.

I was actually surprised how gung ho Glenn Beck was about the game when he started advertising for it.  I mean it's a good game, but he really talks it up.  At our game nights it usually gathers dust while Settlers of Catan (Cities and Knights Expansion) gets a workout.

My kids like to play Apples to Apples Jr. with us.  It makes a good FHE activity.  I'd recommend the regular version if your kids are about 12 and up and the Jr. version if they are much younger.
