I'd love to hear specifics as to why folks hate McCain... I don't think he'd be an effective president because he tries too hard to appease everyone, and it's hard to be a leader with vision and pander to certain factions (with which I disagree... :) ) .
What's your big beef with McCain? And who looks promising to you?

My beef with McCain is that he worked to pass a law that weakens the First Amendment to the Constitution. I really thought the Supreme Court would strike down the law as unconstitutional, but sadly I was wrong.
I don't need any other reason because the Constitution must be adhered to if we want to continue to have a country.
Jacom Sullum (link below) explains it better than I (although I'm not sure why he didn't mention McCain's role in this).
Hee. That topic title just makes me laugh. McCain is my home state senator, you know.
I actually don't hate him. At least no vitriol or anything. I definitely agree on the appeasement though. He's trying too hard to go middle of the road and not offend anyone.
For instance, his position for not supporting the marriage amendment smacked to me of political talk for "I don't wanna, because some people won't like it and then they won't vote for me when I run for president." Okay, maybe that's not what his actual position was, but that's what I got out of it.
Anyone who is so concerned about getting to be president that he doesn't actually do anything isn't doing anything that makes me want him as a president.
McCain the antichrist?...No, McCain would have to have a religious underpinning for that.
Notwithstanding the "God of our Fathers" promotional, McCain fails in about every test of decency I would consider requisite to entrusting the office of the Presidency.
We hear all about the "hero" of Vietnam who waived release as a POW out of principle;
-Wearing Navy wings because your dad is an Admiral, and gets you into flight school, does not make you a hero.
-Staying put in the Hanoi Hilton, when taking advantage of privilage would humiliate yourself, your family, and the nation, does not make you a hero.
-Getting shot down on your first mission over hostile territory, and winding up in a lake, is not heroic.
-Confessing to war crimes on NVA television is not heroic.
-Abandoning your wife and children (she had gained alot of weight while faithfully waiting for his return) is not heroic. This is especially true when the little "hottie" he is currently married to was forthwith wed to this "hero".
-Getting caught with your hand in the till (Keating Seven Scandle) is not heroic.
-Blaming "contributors" for your sticky fingers a la Keating, and then compromising the right to free speech (Campaign Finance reform) for your fellow citizens to mask your shortcomings, is not heroic.
-Writing a book about your faithfulness (or is it your fathers?) is self engratiating...not heroic.
-Taking pride in screwing up the showdown between Bush, and House Democrats, over Judicial nominations is not heroic.
