That the Lord is concerned about the government of the United States of America is evidenced by His having set this country up in the freedom and liberty that He did (3 Nephi 21:4) and "suffered" our constitutional form of government to be established (D&C 101:77-78). "It is not surprising therefore, that the Lord has given us extensive instructions on matters of government. ...the words of God's prophets, together with the United States Constitution, which He caused to be established, provide complete guidance on all important political problems." (H. Verlan Andersen, "Many Are Called But Few Are Chosen", Pg vi)
Do I think the Lord is actively guiding government leaders today? I think the Lord is quite capable of applying additonal persuasion, but continues for now to let us exercise our free agency as much as he deems expedient. I've come to expect just about what we've gotten into in America from the average American voter. I'm more concerned about the LDS voters who have ignored the instruction the Lord gave us on government. I'm in that generation that really blew it by ignoring the admonitions of prophets 20 - 40 years ago.
When people ask me about my political values, I reply that I don't ally myself with any party, and that I spend a significant amount of time researching candidates whom I believe will best represent my views on key issues. I have often said about presidential candidates, "I want someone in the oval office who will be on his knees praying for guidance before he commits the lives of American troops to battle." I've received harsh criticism for that perspective. I'm "naive." Maybe so. But if we sincerely want the Lord's protection promised for this land in the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants, we need to be asking Him on a regular basis.
