"As published Friday morning on the LDS Church's "Newsroom" web site, the immigration statement seen as reinforcing and clarifying its long-standing position on the issue underscores the following points:
 

"The LDS Church discourages its members of the Mormon faith from entering any country without legal documentation.

"The underlying concern of immigration issues "is how we treat each other as children of God.

"Immigration issues need to be resolved at the federal government level.

"State legislation that focuses only on enforcement "is likely to fall short of the high moral standard of treating each other as children of God."

"The church supports efforts "where undocumented immigrants are allowed to square themselves with the law and continue to work without this necessarily leading to citizenship."

 
"In a related statement issued simultaneously Friday morning, the LDS Church reiterated the First Presidency teaching that undocumented status shouldn't alone prevent an otherwise worthy Latter-day Saint from entering the church's temple or being ordained to the priesthood.
 
"The secondary statement also underscored each bishop's role in making appropriate judgments regarding a member's church privileges and discouraged Latter-day Saints from judging fellow congregation members."

I am finding among my LDS friends and acquaintances dismay and frustration, some expressed in emails, which follow:

"The statement has conflicting items within it .... there seems either an ignorance or unwillingness, to mention the larger agenda of global governance .... we have heard statements by H. Verlan Andersons son, and others about how the "brethren" are not going to "tweak the nose of the dragon" .... too late .... but still, one does not have to appear to approve of a wrong policy, either."

"I find it interesting and disconcerting that the Church would state "The LDS Church discourages its members of the Mormon faith from entering any country without legal documentation." but nothing about those illegally in this or in any other country to leave until they can be properly documented."

"I want an official statement signed by the first presidency ..... I am reminded by J. Ruben Clarks comment about how therell be many "holes" in the membership, even "high up" as things deteriorate. There are too many liberals corrupting within the Church, I personally know of some and look at the homosexual conflict, how many "good" members are clearly taking a wrong stance on that issue."

"I just don't understand what is driving the Church to get in the middle of this. It makes no sense. I'm going to bed. I need to sleep this one off."

In late 2006 or early 2007, Elder Eyring, speaking to a large group of family history and church history mssionaries in SLC, said he had just come from a meeting with the First Presidency in which he learned that the First Presidency had earlier that morning discussed the immigration situation and concluded that it was "going to continue and we will just have to live with it."   So even though I believe illegal immigration has been and is being fomented for sinister purposes, I guess I'm just going to have to live with it.
