I found this article by Joel Skousen, editor of World Affairs Brief very interesting
"Will Ron Paul run again? I think it is very likely. He won the CPAC straw polling, besting Mitt Romney (who had won in the past 3 years) by a whopping 31% to Romney's 22%. Sarah Palin could only draw 7%. Author and commentator Thomas Woods asked Paul a carefully worded question during an interview on February 19, 2010 after ticking "off a few of the good results of the 2008 presidential campaign: the Federal Reserve is now a subject of debate for practically the first time ever, it's possible now to propose that our government's foreign policy might be a teensy-weensy bit not-conservative, and Austrian economics is enjoying its greatest surge in interest since Hayek won the Nobel Prize. Likewise, we now have more people interested in these ideas than ever before, and another effort could ---- who knows ---- triple our numbers. Now granting how physically and mentally taxing such a campaign..." He asked "can you name for us any good reasons not to run?" Big cheers from the crowed. Paul "got a big grin on his face and ultimately admitted that he couldn't think of any."''
"Besides his increasing popularity among conservatives, the establishment media is taking him a lot more seriously this second time around. Larry King had Paul on his show along with arch-Democratic activist James Carville, asking Paul to respond to several questions about his new found popularity and his success in getting Congress to seriously consider auditing the Fed. Paul was modest as usual, but King no longer treated Paul as a pariah. Even Devil-incarnate James Carville had a few nice things to say about him. ''
"Paul's following is growing much larger now, and his popularity is spilling over onto his son's campaign to garner the Republican nomination for the open Senate seat in Kentucky. Although the press is refusing to admit it, Rand Paul is now the frontrunner in that race. The younger Paul also has the endorsement of Sarah Palin, for what it's worth. That said, I think the establishment will do everything they can to sabotage Ron Paul if he decides to run again. ''
From where I sit in the relatively strong LDS community of Mesa, AZ, Mitt Romney seems to have the most support for President in 2012. His success in business and past church service are very impressive to LDSs who know nothing more about him. I expect it will be the same in Utah.
But in the end, I agree with Skousen that the "establishment" (I call them latter-day gadiantons) will do thier best to sabotage both Paul and Romney. Neither have the same goals as the "establishment".
If Paul runs again, I may even register republican this time in order to vote for him in the primary. Paul is not a perfect candidate. I don't agree with his stance on the Iraq war. But he is the best candidate with a chance to win.
