He'll being doing it officially on Easter this year. I'm really convinced this man is positioning himself for a Presidential run in 2012. I'm really befuddled by anyone converting to Roman Catholocism; what draws them to it? Its doctrine? Its long duration?
If Gingrich would abide by the Golden Rule and the 10 Commandments I wouldn't care what religion he embraced. It appears he wants to make something of a show of his becoming a Catholic.
Yeah, unfortunately it's probably a stunt. That's unfortunate. But I'm not surprised, either. Now, It'd be easier to believe the sincerity of a politician converting to LDS, because, as far as I can see, there's not much political benefit to be had from that outside of Utah.

Several years ago when I was a branch president in Denmark, I reprimanded certain members for purposely and unnecessarily making a living off the government welfare system. Our high council Rep. supported me by speaking in a sacrament meeting on the subject. The stake president told me to let it go; that's the way it goes in Denmark. If I were the bishop of certain LDS legislators and governors here is the U.S., I would have no hesitation to chastise them for their violations of moral or constitutional principles.
And the church doesn't direct in all things. It wouldn't make sense. Sure, they could tell everyone how to vote, what groceries to buy and where, where to live, etc, and as long as it was all done under inspiration it would all work. But no one would grow, and that is the point of why we're here on Earth.
