Polls open despite lack of candidates

Larimer county in Colorado, by state law, has to open its polling places for the primary despite the lack of more than one candidate.
At first I thought that this was just another example of government inefficiency, but then I thought about it. There really is no such thing as an uncontested race in the US, since you can write in candidates. Oftentimes a candidate cannot get on the ballot because of lack of signatures, but there's always the remote possibility that he could win a write in campaign. It's happened in the past.
So I think it may actually be good that they have to keep their polls open.

Yep - write in candidates do occasionally make it.

Also, if people pour out of their homes to vote for only one candidate, that person can claim a 'mandate from the people', and might have a bit more political weight to throw around than if only 2% of the voters actually cared enough to cast a vote for them.
