AMA votes to support legislation to make home birth illegal

We haven't done a home birth, but I'd still like the option in the future. The American Medical Association has voted to support legislation to make giving birth at home illegal.

Our Catholic neighbors have had all of their kids at home. I've lost count of how many they have - they descend in a big mob and sweep my kids away in a big wave of giggling and sun hats.

I am a member of and support the AMA. Here is what the AMA actually said. "that our American Medical Association support the recent American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists statement that 'the safest setting for labor, delivery, and the immediate post-partum period is in the hospital, or a birthing center within a hospital complexIt is true that the hospital is much safer. I was part of about 20-30 births over 2 weeks, and found it amazing how fast a seemingly "routine" delivery could go bad and require a C-section or other hospital assistance to save the both the mother and the baby's life.

But to make it illegal? Goes a bit too far, doesn't it? You shouldn't be forced to do anything that is a personal choice. Whether or not it may be deemed "safer" of "better" somehow. I liken it to the seatbelt law. You'd be crazy not to use them but to make a law that they're mandatory? Government should stay out of legislating personal choice issues, period.

Organist, I realize that supporting legislation wasn't part of the resolution, but according to the article the AMA is talking openly about supporting such legislation. Not to mention that insurance companies base what they will cover off of AMA recommendations.
Like I said, our two boys were born in hospitals. But I want the option and think others should have the option of doing a home birth.

If hospitals weren't forced to treat and pay the medical bills (with the help of higher taxes and higher medical bills for everyone else), I might agree. But, as it currently stands, there are public issues involved, not just personal ones. Change those other laws first.
