The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is asking California members to join the effort to amend that state's constitution to define marriage as being between a man and a woman.
Alas no link to the letter. I will look around.

I'm really wary of blaming specific natural disaster events on the relative unrighteousness of the area.

The latest letter is a disappointment to members of Affirmation, an international support group for gay, lesbian and transgender Mormons. Last month, Affirmation called on the church not to meddle in California politics. This initiative will hurt so many people," executive director W. Olin Thomas said in a statement Monday. "The California law affects civil marriage; it has no effect on any religious institution or official. Affirmation leaders are scheduled to meet with the head of LDS Family Services, a church social services agency, in August to begin a conversation meant to bridge the divide between Mormonism and gay members hurt by church teachings that homosexuality is a sin.
Am I the only one who thinks that there may be a lot of people excommunicated over this?
I think it could become a big issue, but people are all at different levels of testimony and understanding. It is awfully hard to combat all the supposed logic of the gay activism movement. And some people just don't see what effects accepting this lifestyle will have (and has had) on our society. I can speak as one who didn't always get it on this issue. It wouldn't have been good to have forced my hand before I was ready to understand and accept the Church's stance.

I wonder how long before the Canadian govt. names the Church a hate group?

True, the Lord causes the rain to fall on the just as well as the unjust. But the scriptures are replete with examples of the Lord using natural disasters to humble his people so that they will turn to him. The prophecies of the last days are definitely no exception. I stand by my opinion.
I think the Church is taking considerable risk in taking a side in what could be considered a political issue . This increases the possibility that the Church will be portrayed as a "hate group", and also could jeapordize the Church's tax exempt status.
