Woo-hoo! Thanks for the link. It's against my religion to pay for my own credit score - now I can get it free.

Hold your horses, people!  Read the article.  Two things you should know:

1.  you can ALWAYS get a free credit report.  It's free to you once a year from all 3 of the major providers:  Equifax, Transunion, and Experian.  Go to https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp to get yours free (as set up by the federal govt).

2.  according to the article, the credit score is NOT your FICA score.  Your FICO score is the score that over 90% of creditors look at to determine your interest rate.  The credit score that this lawsuit provides is a credit score used by less than 5% of companies.  To obtain your FICO score, you can contact any of the companies above and pay a small fee (usually around $6 or so).

Oh, and the free monitoring is either 6 mo or 9 mo.  It's not lifetime.  I would recommend getting monitoring only if you are in jeopardy of having your identity stolen (credit card, license, other documents were recently lost/stolen).  Otherwise, checking your credit report for any errors once a year should be sufficient.
