Fat and Fit

http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/diet.fitness/04/28/fitness.heart.ap/index.html

New research challenges the notion that you can be fat and fit, finding that being active can lower but not eliminate heart risks faced by heavy women.

"It doesn't take away the risk entirely. Weight still matters," said Dr. Martha Gulati, a heart specialist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Heart disease risk was 54 percent higher in overweight active women than for normal-weight active women.

That study is rather limited, because it relies on self-reporting over 11 years, and many, if not most, overweight and obese people think that they are more active than they really are. (They also think they eat less than they really do.)

Another limitation is the population studied, women with an average age of 54.

I'll have to wait for the article to come out before I can make any more comments. I wonder if they are measuring secondary outcomes like blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides rather than primary outcomes such as heart attacks and strokes.

Yeah, those limits were mentioned in the article. And obviously it's better to be overweight and active rather than overweight and inactive. (I do wonder if it's better to be a normal weight and inactive vs. overweight and active, though.) In my entirely non-scientific opinion, being significantly overweight can be like playing russian roulette with one's health. Except with more than one bullet in the gun.

Well, if you're overweight, I think being active is better than not being active. That seems obvious, right? Or does exercise really not matter? I knew an older man (60-ish) who was normal-to-skinny and he said his Dr. told him he had the worst cholesterol he'd ever seen. Maybe some genetic predispositions just can't be overcome...??

What do you think, hic? You're sort of our resident weight-loss expert now, I'd say.

Have your BP, cholesterol, etc. numbers changed significantly? Do you feel much healthier now?

Actually, Coco, that might be a different genetic predisposition working against the man. Say he's predisposed to be skinny and so he doesn't feel he has to monitor what he eats, because he never gains weight. Say he's also predisposed to high cholesterol, his eating of lots of man food (meat, ya'll) is gonna cause big trouble. Being thin doesn't have to mean a person is eating right.

I knew a thin man who was on heart-attack alert (change or you'll have one) by age 45. He had to begin eating very differently and had to start exercising.

Gah. I'm a very flawed expert, but I'll give my opinion. I have never had my cholesterol tested so I don't have before and after numbers. I'd bet there's a significant difference, but that's speculation. I have never had high blood pressure. Wait, this just in... looks like I had something they are now classifying as prehypertension.

http://www.health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update0803a.shtml

At my heaviest, my blood pressure was about 125/90. Now it is about 90/55. That's after a 70 pound drop.

I do feel MUCH better. I cannot stress the difference enough. I have more energy. I do not get tired going up a flight of stairs. My back doesn't hurt. My knees don't hurt. My body likes to move. I run across parking lots to get to the store just because and it doesn't wind me. Once my foot is a bit better, we're going to go camping and hiking at the campground where we camped just before I began losing weight just over a year ago. I'll report back about the difference in my hiking skillz. thumbsup.gif

So they're lowering the numbers for blood pressure, huh? I remember when they lowered the cholesterol from 300 to 200. Some people think it's a pharmaceutical conspiracy... :E

Might be. Should we ask Mirk to knock it off or is he not in charge of pharmaceutical conspiracies?
