"Drug cartels are sending a brutal message to police and soldiers in cities across Mexico: Join us or die.
The threat appears in recruiting banners hung across roadsides and in publicly posted death lists. Cops get warnings over their two-way radios. At least four high-ranking police officials were gunned down this month, including Mexico's acting federal police chief."
"Police are increasingly giving up. Last week, U.S. officials revealed that three Mexican police commanders have crossed into the United States to request asylum, saying they are unprotected and fear for their lives."

Oh, and I wish those people who think drugs are so harmless and should be legalized could see up close what those cartels that supply their drugs do to communities. Harmless, my foot.

I'll admit I know very, very little about the drug trafficking and cartels and how all that works... does this tie in to illegal immigration somehow? I mean, I've seen Clear and Present Danger, but I really don't get it. (Alright, that was a dumb joke, but I'm not joking when I say how dumb I am about this.) How do they get so brazen as to take on the police?

Did you read the article, Coco? (That would let me know where to start. Not that I'm an expert.) And yes, a certain amount of illegal immigration involves drug cartels, dealers and gangs.
How can they take on the police? Well, the cartels have been winning for years actually. They are very powerful and widespread. The police have been trying to crack down recently and the result is that the cartels are terrorizing them. Also, the police in Mexico have a reputation for being very corrupt, so the regular people are not as supportive as they might otherwise be. It's disheartening that as the police are working towards finally doing the right thing the cartels are breaking them like twigs.

7 Mexican officers killed, 4 more wounded in drug raid. Also of note:
"Some 300 tons of cocaine are estimated to pass through Mexico to the United States each year, and Mexico is considered the largest foreign supplier of crystal methamphetamine to the United States."

Dude. MrCoco just went through a day of special training with his work (DOD) and they totally talked about this stuff... the gangs out of Mexico and S.Am. are working more like the Mafia... they are headquartered in the prisons... a lot of these guys are covered with tatoos... all over their faces, heads, necks... he saw footage from prisons where they'd murder people... bad stuff.
