Rice and Wheat Shortages

I have had it explained to me that the shortages at the cannery of wheat is for the following reasons.  The church will only purchase wheat at a certain price.  When it exceeds that cost, they will not purchase it.  The reason for this is to keep the prices on the wheat down.  The church cost is lower because they do not clean the wheat as thoroughly as some of the bigger companies.  When the next wheat crop is harvested we should see wheat back in stock again.

My understanding of the rice shortage is that the panic buying hit when the media announced shortages.  As soon as word of rationing got out, panic buying set in.  I was told one of the reasons for the rationing was because many restaurants started buying larger amounts to make sure they had their stocks.  Stores started the rationing to make sure there was rice available for the individual consumer.  In any event, whatever the reason for the shortages, it still equals no wheat and rice on the shelves.  I do not know what the status of the small bags of rice in the grocery stores is currently at.  If we all make wise decisions in our purchases there will be enough and to spare for all.

Yeah, I probably contributed to that panic buying. Or atleast, my timing for getting my long-term storage going did. What can I say? That was the plan for a big chunk of the tax return money.

There is still plenty of food on the shelves in the stores. No one with money to spend will need to be hungry anytime soon. I hope this panic buying simmers down before the next wheat crop comes in. I don't want to have to fight off my fellow saints to get at some wheat. matrixfight.gif

No rice at our Costco yesterday.... was completely sold out last Monday.
50 lbs of flour has gone from $7 a bag to $17 a bag in just two months.
Some of the smaller bags of flour were sold out at Costco this week.
Gas is $3.35 a gallon here.
Will our savings be worth anything in a couple of years?
How are folks suppose to retire?

The church buys the white wheat, but they grow the red wheat, there's a church owned wheat farm here in MI. There is plenty of wheat in the church silos, it's just that with the unnecessary panic and the new program of being able to buy the wheat and other stuff already drypacked they have been trying to catch up in meeting the "need". Things are close to back on track and within the next month the storehouses should all be stocked with commodities for members to pack themselves or to purchase ready packed. I got my info from the guy in charge of our cannery here in MI, I was just there yesterday drypacking and our storehouse had plenty of everything except no white wheat (due to high prices).

Yeah, that's where I'm at. Trying to be patient and wait for the supply to come back up so I can get my wheat. Because this spring was the first time since I reactivated a few years ago that I had both the desire and the means to buy long-term storage.

The important part is desire to get your food supply, Hick. Also, you can start with other commodities, such as oats, barley, or beans. Variety is important, and even though wheat is the cornerstone of most people's storage, it isn't the only thing. Or start with the more expensive things, like dry milk or fruit drink mix.
Now that farmers markets are opening up you could also do things like buy a lot of cucumbers and do some pickling.

I bought a bunch of rice just before it got scarce and an equal amount of beans. I am maintaining my 3-month supply. I'm not panicked about the wheat, I'll just feel better once I have it is all.
