I went to see about this rice shortage myself. There is NO white rice. There was about a half to 2/3 pallet of brown rice. There is no wheat and no flour. There was normal amounts of Minute Rice and Bisquick. There were a lot more people then I am used to seeing in the store at the time I went. I'm usually alone in the aisle with rice and Bisqucik. Not today, there were at least ten others in the aisle with me.
Just some food for thought. I don't know if this is a real shortage or just panic buying, but either way, the product is not on the shelf and really that is all that matters.
Hmm, there were tons (literally) of flour at my Sam's. Makes me lean towards it being panic buying, but you're right that what matters is the food not being on the shelves.

As a side note, I work in a bank and I've noticed a progressive increase in the amount of people cashing out their gov't bonds. And yesterday- it must've been an all time record for me. A couple years ago I wouldn't see that many for MONTHS. But this is just my very narrow experience.

Dude. MIL keeps giving us bonds for the kiddos on birthdays and Christmas. I do think about cashing them in and investing the money instead sometimes. Maybe I should go visit Coco.

I'm guessing people are not reinvesting them, I'm guessing it's like their savings that they are having to dip into... but that's just me being a doom-and-gloomer. Who knows...
I work in "operations" so I don't work with any customers (all us bombastic people work there ) so I can't ask them what the heck they're doing.

Well, I suppose I may be contributing in some small way. I recently pulled some money out of savings to hide under the bed as an emergency cash reserve.
I also moved our savings account from the "Brand New Fly By Night Online-only Bank" that gave me a half a percent better interest, and put it in a normal bank. But that money's still in "the system", so I'm not helping the panic there.

The online food storage order deal is no longer on the Church's front page. You can easily find it, but they just don't have it on the front page anymore.

Today in Wal-Mart I took a megaphone and gave a little speech after I climbed up on the open refridgerator bin thing with the burritos in it:
"Look around, people! That's right! There will come a time when we will see these very shelves bare! Empty, I say! What will you do then? How will you feel when you knew you squandered your time and resources on Guitar Hero and other useless entertainment? (right here I had to kick away one of the employees) Food, people! You must store fooooood!" (this was where they got me - I'd hopped over the turkeys and they were more slippery than I thought.)

Just another point of info - I went to my Sam's Club today. Loveland, CO isn't exactly the home of hard core survivalists. But they were out of rice and the girl I talked to (who works in that section) had no idea when they'd get more. I can see runs on bulk goods in Utah, where many people have at least some concept of storage. But even though we have some good church members here, this isn't exactly food storage central.

Well, that might make sense because of the news reports. Nothing like hearing X is in short supply to make people want it more. Cabbage Patch doll, anyone?

True, but despite what they tell you, there is pretty much no chance of your kids' deaths being caused by not having a nintendo wii. If you don't eat it can have dire consequences. Obviously if there's no rice your family still eats. But panic that has started with one type of food could spread to others.

Yes, it could. And I have been wondering something. The Church has been emphasizing preparedness even more lately. I've been receiving my own personal promptings that NOW is the time to do it. I'm wondering if some of these other people contributing to the panic might be reacting to promptings of their own. I'm talking non-members here. Like maybe something big really is right around the corner. That's pure speculation, though.

I heard elsewhere that the Denver cannery had a shipment recently that was supposed to last a month but only lasted a few days. Now, that's probably panic buying by people who already are interested in food storage, but I can be optimistic and hope that people who had never considered food storage seriously are now starting to get going on their own supply.

Obviously if there's no rice your family still eats. But panic that has started with one type of food could spread to others. Potatoes are next. Or oats. Or both. Do your part to fuel the panic and buy them in large quantities today!

If you're not in the market for corn, the cost of it is irrelevant. No biggie.
What I'd like to know is - if the cost of corn went through the roof because of ethanol, how come I can still buy Doritos on sale for less than $2 a bag?

Did you hear that, people? Coco's gonna start a panic run on Bisquick. Buy it up now and then make a killing on eBay later.

You know what would be hilarious? Naughty, but hilarious...
Get the older kids in on this one -
Okay, go to Wal-Mart and get two shopping carts. Fill them with all the rice and flour (or sugar or salt or whatever - pick two things) in the store. Go around in a semi-rush and look sideways a lot and talk in hushed voices. Once in a while say some catch-word or phrase just a bit louder so people can hear it. Stuff like, "riots" "Costco's empty" "right around the corner" "200 a barrel" "government mandate" ...etc... you get the idea. Then talk on your cellphone with phrases like, "NO WAY!" "You have GOT to be kidding me" "The ammo's COMPLETELY gone?" "I've got it, I'm on my way"
Wear boots and camo while you do this. Orange hunting cap would be good, too.
I'm still working out what to do once you get to the check-out...

Ok, but when a bunch of us go to the cannery, that would be a horde of hoarders, no?

The reason for that, as I've heard it, is that they buy awesome quantities of corn in advance. The Doritos you see are likely made with corn bought last year at a much lower price. Doritos next year, according to this theory, should be much more expensive.
