The Church of Oprah

Have you guys even heard about this?  I don't watch Oprah - MrCoco DESPISES Oprah.  I do have an inkling of the *power* she has.  However, I had no idea it was this big.  This video was put up on YouTube just this last March 26th (anniversary of the BOM, interestingly) and it already has 4.3 million views.

I think this is very insidious and I find myself wanting to join with the Christians on this issue, although typically we as LDS don't align ourselves with them...

(almost 6 minutes long video)

Let's apply our standards to what we ask Christians to do.  Go check it out yourself...don't rely on a video put out there by naysayers.  Check it out for yourself.

I did.  I went to the website that talks about this new age religion.  I had gotten dozens of emails from my friends and family who were appalled by Oprah's Church.  First, it is not her church.  It is an organization that teaches others about spirituality (according to their interpretation).  Oprah read the book and liked it so much that she wanted to help teach.  Anyone can do that by going to this website.  Now with Oprah's connections, she actually has one of the founders helping her with her online tutorial.

Second, after reading their philosophy, I can see how insidious this is to reducing Christ's role in our lives and salvation.  But, is it any more so than Muslim belief?  Jewish belief?  Hindu belief?  I don't know.

Gah. I haven't been watching Oprah for years. Apparently with very good reason.

Okay, so it's not "Oprah's" church. Who's is it...just so we're on the same page?

I was mainly commenting on the insidiousness of it. Basically it's Humanism, isn't it? And it's being pushed by the richest woman in the world... we've got to listen to her. She's made herself bigger than almost anyone - came from nothing - she MUST have a clue. Those Christians really are pretty closed minded. Mormons even more so.

As for comparing this to Jewish, Muslim or any other religion, I think it breaks down all of them. At least the other major religions believe in a Being outside themselves. In this one, YOU ARE YOUR OWN GOD.

I haven't watched Oprah for years either.

And I heartily dislike "The Secret."

How do you know that this religion preaches you are your own god?

Because you don't need to follow a prescribed path to "god." There is no one "way" to god but it's whatever you choose.

I know someone and to hear her mother tell it is so negative and self-absorbed. She seems to have no goals and suffers from depression. However, she watches Oprah and that seems to be some of the most positive food for thought for her.

For myself, I have seen eye opening programs on Oprah such as youth who fall through the cracks of the system and are living on their own before 18. Hopefully, this has improved. I am not sure if it was her show or later that I learned of the many homeless youth.

I saw on her show the remarkable young man from Ethopia who reserved a scholariship to Harvard. He studied hard and his words was motiviated by the memory of a woman with the will to live and keep walking to safety at a Refugee camp when the soles of her feet were raw. I think he was the one that said how we have more food for pets at our grocery stores than they have for people in his country.

I did a speech on Oprah and the power she has on the population for my History of Mass Communication. Certainly many buy a book with her endorsement.

I do not think I have seen Oprah for some time. I always kind of felt like she was like one of those free spirits embracing all religions and respecting all faiths. I know she often speaks of "The Universe." I have felt that she often came across as Christian although I think there were many leanings towards New Age. If people feel that New Age is the religion for them, I will have to respect that.

If they are kept from the truth because they know not where to find it, then that is my fault in as far as I fall short in sharing my testimony with those who would have a heart soft enough to embrace the Gospel.

As a member of a Church that is outside of mainstream Christianity in the minds of many Christians, I am appreciative when those of other faiths respect the beliefs of the LDS Faith.

I think all major religions have some truth and can bless the lives of those who live it.

I do not feel it is right to mock any religion. If a religion is guilty of a crime that society holds to be a crime, then we have a right to enforce the full justice of the law.
