The Happening

Anyone seen trailers for this movie yet?  It's coming out June 13th (Friday the 13th) this summer.  It's the newest by M. Night Shyamalan.  It looks like something Coco would TOTALLY want to see. headbang.gif  Unfortunately, this looks like it's going to be Shyamalan's first rated R movie.  He also did the Sixth Sense, but I think my favorite is The Village. thumbsup.gif

I haven't seen any of that director's stuff, so I can't give an opinion.

Oh, Arbi.  You really should watch some of his movies.  I think Sixth Sense is the best by far.  But I enjoyed The Village (I liked how it made me think if I would go to the same lengths--not saying anymore--don't want any spoilers) and I really liked Signs (good movie about regaining faith).  I didn't enjoy Unbreakable so much--I liked the overall plot, but found the movie to be tedious.

I can't tell what this new movie is about.  Why rated R?  Is it bloody or something?

He also did The Lady In the Water.  Nobody but me and my wife saw it though.

Signs was a great movie. Mostly because it gives me a chance to snort and act superior when people tell me it was about aliens.

I've like several of his movies. The Lady in the Water was very good and so was The Village. Who knew that Ron Howard could have such a pretty daughter. I loved the Sixth Sense. Shyamalan is one of the few guys that can actually surprise me at the end of a film. He gets you thinking that things are one way and then pulls the carpet out from under you. In my opinion he is one of the greatest directors of the last 20 years but without the attention that Spielburg and Lucas recieve. The only other director that actually had films that had the same affect on me as Shyamalan was Hitchcock.

I have not seen Lady in the Water...I just kept putting it off. Now that I know he did it, it is on my must see list.

Ugh, I hated Signs. How come no one could take out the aliens, I mean all you needed was a glass of water!

But seriously, a farmer without at least a shotgun in the house. I have NEVER met a farmer that did not at least have a couple of firearms.

A apparently, the aliens are idiot-savants, they can make spaceships and travel to earth to kidnap people, but cannot turn doorknobs or bust down a door.weirdface

I did watch I Am Legend last night, some big plot holes too, but it was fun.
Problems:
-the mutants are no longer intelligent, but somehow are able to construct a trap for Neville or the best plan to get Neville is for the chief mutant to bash his head repeatedly into the door?
-the mutants cannot come into the light and yet know that Neville goes to a video store and talks to the mannequins.
-Neville sleeps in the bathtub one time, but in his bed the rest of the time, why?
-if the mutants are starving, why didn't they eat the dogs the chief mutant had that were mutant dogs?
-where did Neville get that incredible grenade he had that created that massive fire and explosion, and on top of it, did not kill the woman and child?

But seriously, a farmer without at least a shotgun in the house. I have NEVER met a farmer that did not at least have a couple of firearms.   I'm guessing since he was a minister that perhaps he's against guns.  Plus, they did have a gun in the house--in the basement, right?  I remember the brother fumbling with shells or something while trying to load it.

A apparently, the aliens are idiot-savants, they can make spaceships and travel to earth to kidnap people, but cannot turn doorknobs or bust down a door.weirdfaceBut it made it more exciting!

Problems:
-the mutants are no longer intelligent, but somehow are able to construct a trap for Neville or the best plan to get Neville is for the chief mutant to bash his head repeatedly into the door?  They were evolving...they were getting back the ability to reason and think.
-the mutants cannot come into the light and yet know that Neville goes to a video store and talks to the mannequins.  Perhaps they watched him from windows?  I'm guessing they were very aware of him since he was food who didn't act like the other sources of food.
-Neville sleeps in the bathtub one time, but in his bed the rest of the time, why?  I took that as he was having an especially difficult time remembering his family or feeling overwhelmed at his aloneness that it was too much at that moment.
-if the mutants are starving, why didn't they eat the dogs the chief mutant had that were mutant dogs?  Why would they?  They didn't eat each other so why would they eat their dogs?  Just a thought.
-where did Neville get that incredible grenade he had that created that massive fire and explosion, and on top of it, did not kill the woman and child?  He was the storage king!  He had tons of stuff stored...so I wasn't surprised at all that he had a grenade.  I can't remember the end--were the woman and child even in the same building at the time of the explosion?  Or did they crawl through the escape and were outside?

That's because you are under the mistaken impression that Signs was a movie about aliens.  It wasn't.  Not even remotely.  Oh sure, it had aliens in it, but Lord of the Rings wasn't a movie about farming practices of hobbits, even though had corn stalks in it.

Signs was a movie about faith.

If I was the Will Smith character, I'd have gotten a tank to drive around.

Just saw, I am Legend. Talk about depressing. Also have seen above mentioned movies. I agree Signs was really dumb (and faithy!)... The village was decent. Liked Sixth Sense... I understand M Night Shamalamadingdong is doing a movie based upon AVATAR the television cartoon series... which is a FANTASTIC series already. I hope he doesn't screw it up.

Also just saw "August Rush" (too contrived for me to take seriously, too much hippy crap in it too, and really bothered by the whole moral--which imo was nonsense), "Bee Movie" (layme, Jerry Seinfeld's type of humor does NOT translate well to animation) and "Martian Child" (which had a few too many liberal digs in it for me to enjoy, though of all of them, I think I enjoyed the most)...

As you can probably tell, I don't just "enjoy" movies anymore. :)

Alright, saw I am Legend last night, after I carefully skipped over all the SPOILERS in this thread! Thank you very much!

I liked it o-kay, but it wasn't as good as I'd hoped it would be. Plus MrCoco commenting on what a total idiot the guy was the whole time didn't help things. Pretty soon he was so fed up he was on the mutants' side. "Eat 'im up! Just EAT him!" rolleyes When Neville was pleading with the mannequin to "just say something" or whatever and was half-crying, I thought I was going to lose MrCoco for the rest of the movie. I thought that part was pretty lame, too, actually. Same reason we largely hated Castaway. "Wilsonnnnn!" bleh.gif

No desire to see Speed Racer. Sorry.

la la la... headbang.gif

Duke: Seen it. It was okay up to the point with the [bleepity-bleep-bleep!] replicators... the replicators was what made the whole stargate series suck rocks...

I think Omega Man with Charleton Heston was somewhat better than I Am Legend. I also recommend Soylent Green by Heston. "It's people!"

Just watched Enemy at the Gates, very good movie, and The Transporter, over the top fun and action.

The martial arts scenes in The Transporter are very well done.

Yeah, the Transporter. Loved that whole kickin' butt thing while covered in oil. That was cool.
Except now that I've seen The Italian Job, my internal commentator always refers to Jason Statham as Handsome Rob.

Coco, come on up here and watch "The Happening" with me - that way, you'll only be seeing a movie rated Mature. wink.gif

I've seen all of Mr. Shamalama's - I can never remember how to spell his name - movies (including Lady in the Water, so you're not the only one, LM.) Personally, Signs was my favorite. The only one I was disappointed in personally was The Village - but I suspect that it was because I'd checked it out at spoiler.com first, so I knew the twist.

I've seen Signs thumbsup.gif, The Village thumbsup.gif, and Unbreakable thumbsdown.gif. I want to see Sixth Sense but just never get around to it.

I definitely want to see this movie. Rated R or not.

Have you seen Vincent Price's "Last Man on Earth"?  Much better than Heston's movie.

How can you say that about a guy that once played Joseph Smith?
