I don't do any of the social networking websites. I have lots of real friends. Plus many of those people are liars anyway. My sister in law and her ex husband were always one upping eachother on their competing sites. It was stupid. I know a sister in the ward that was going through a divource and check out her soon to be ex's new girlfriend on their and figured out she was married and used the info to cause trouble. Between those two stories I figured out I was better off without those sorts of distractions.

My life is full enough of people as is - why on earth would I want to open another avenue for them to get at me?

I was hating MySpace, but now I'm just apathetic. What a difference a few days makes. thumbsup.gif

If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report with Facebook or Myspace, I sure haven't heard about it.

Facebook is the way I keep in touch with my extended family. My siblings and mother are on there, several of my aunts and uncles are - including the aunt who's living in Europe as a mission presiden't wife - and almost all of my cousins on one side of my family. It's how we share photos and news. As oldest grandchild on that side, I'm the administrator for a family site. A little while ago it was the way we organized a family fast for a cousin going in for IVF.

Because so many of my maternal clan are on there, about a month ago my grandfather signed up. His health is declining and he doesn't get out of his apartment much anymore, so e-mail, Skype and Facebook is how he stays in touch with his over-100-members posterity. My other grandma isn't on Facebook, but she's got a laptop and an e-mail address.

Facebook isn't inherently evil, anymore than the internet is evil. It's a neutral thing, and can be used for good or evil. Facebook IS bad if you've got a page full of crude applications, it's taking up a huge chunk of your time, or takes the place of your day-to-day relationships (which is also a potential danger for an online forum). Personally, I spend about 15 minutes on Facebook a day, am anti-application, and always remind myself that the internet is never truly a private place.
