Kosovo declares independance. Bosnia & Russia upset.

Heres an article I think does a good job of summing it up: link
President Bush seemed very quick about recognizing it: link

Honestly I don't know what to think about it. On one hand I tend to like to see Russia upset, and think this clarifies the UN control limbo the place has been in. On the other hand I don't like the idea that this could be a safe haven for radical islamists, or that it could spur seperatist / irridentist movements throughout the world.

Russia does not like their "possessions" leaving. They recently threatened to nuke the Ukraine if they joined NATO.

Russia has no leg to stand on in regards to possessions.  Kosovo was never a Russian possession. Yugoslavia, while formerly communist was not Russian, and Tito worked very hard to make sure neither the east or west gained too strong an influence over his country. He played both sides of the cold war off each other with great effectiveness.  Prior to WWII The whole region was in a state of flux between independant kingoms and other random forms of government dating back to WWI, before that it was the possession of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and prior to that belonged to the Ottoman Turks.  Russia has had influnce (as seen by the slavic language) but has never held ownership of the region in any degree.

That said the Russians have backed the Serbs extensively in regards to Kosovo.

The Serbs will not let this go likely. They attribute their cultural and historical identity to Kosvo Polje which is just south of the Pristina (The capitol of Kosovo). They see the site of the battle there as the time and place where they [the Serbs] were forged (in a defeat strangely enough) into a nation/people rather than a collection of tribes or feudal states.

They would be more willing to let their other autonomous region, Vovadjina in the northern part of Serbia, split off than Kosovo. It doens't mean this isn't going to stand, but the serbs are rather understandibly (at least from their point of view) upset.

As I see it, Kosovo will get into the UN(Russia will let it happen with the right incentives) but Serbia will probably keep em out of OCSE.

As to anyone Deploying armored Columns, well there is the little factor of KFOR currently having several thousand troops throughout the new Country, including a couple thousand US Troops.

Kosovo would be smart to join NATO, ASAP.

No real need to, Nato is already heavily involved, to the tune of 17,000 troops, most from Nato members.
