Global Poverty Act

Barack Obama proposed this bill at the end of last year, and it just passed the Senate Foreign Relations Committee with unanimous consent on Feb 13, 2008.

Heres a link to the bill.

Pretty much it commits the United States to spending 0.7% of its GDP ($850 billion/year) on foreign aid (through the UN).

I think its a horrible idea.

A country with severe debt problems has no business spending more money.

Isn't that a part of the U.N.'s Millenium Program that also aims to ban small arms ownership by private individuals?

Until we boot the elected scum out of office this nonsense of giving away billion overseas funded by debt to China will continue.

We have an obligation to care for the hungry and widows, but we also aren't supposed to run faster than we have strength. I agree with Arbi.

I think that giving money to the church is an excellent way to care for widows and orphans. The church does that around the world.

And the money we give to the church will most likely reach those who need it and not some petty dictator in Africa.

I really don't like the "through the UN" part. The flaxen cords are winding...

I agree with what everyone has said so far.

I see this as another way we are giving our soverignty to organizations like the UN. On top of it I don't think this would help the poor people in the world that much. Just giving people money hasn't solved the problem of poverty.
