I had the please this weekend of going on a campout with my son, it was between 12-15 degrees at night. Now, my son and I have cold weather sleeping gear and clothing, most of the kids and leaders did not. Kids with at best 55 degree rated sleeping bags, no extra shoes, socks, no layering of clothing, etc.
This coupled with the admonition of the Lord that when you have to flee, pray that it be not during the winter makes me wonder how many people have it as part of their 72 hour kits cold weather gear. I watched one evening a RS Homemaking class on 72 hour kits and watched as people brought theirs in, I was appalled. Some had duffle bags, plastic 5 gallon buckets, trashcans with wheels, etc. I think someone had a knapsack. No one had any weather appropriate gear. I imagine most do not have such in their cars either.
Given the history of the saints and of things to come, it would seem prudent to properly prepare.

Our 72-hour 'bug out' gear is all in backpacks and duffles. We go through them every general conference and swap out the clothing, replace the perishable food, make sure the diapers are the right size, etc.
Summer and fair weather stuff is packed along with the rest of the stuff. We have one massive duffle with sleeping bags and tents and coats and blankets and stuff for cold weather. Just like the scripture says, heaven help us if we have to lug our 72-hr kit and our winter stuff somewhere. Colorado mountain winters can be quite harsh and unforgiving.

And I'd discuss the holy books with the learned men, seven hours every day. That would be the sweetest thing of all.
Cold weather gear is definitely something that should be considered and included. Cat has a scout camp out this weekend and he has been busy trying to get outfitted with all the necessary warm clothing/sleeping bag/boots/ etc. There's no way I would let a son of mine go on a winter camp out without the appropriate gear. So it all should be included in a 72 hour emergency kit as well.
Especially at this time of year. This morning the temperature outside was -1 degrees below zero and the wind chill was 15 below.
72 hr. kit in a trash can with wheels?!? ooh, boy... that just struck me as funny. See people heading out on the deserted highway... "Hey, dude, what's in the trash can?" "Oh, my wife is really into scrapbooking, see..." Holy cow, people.
I don't know what besides the constant harsh reminders of destruction and plague and death will get these types to pull their heads out.
