A decent online bulk foods source

While searching for a source of good online chocolate I found www.bulkfoods.com which a lot of you probably already knew about, but which I was delighted with.  Aside from cabbage powder, which sounds disgusting, there was a lot of dehydrated foods that you can't find in the cannery but would be great for dry pack canning.  Add to that the fact that the larger the order the cheaper the price, and shipping over $75 is free, and the handling charge is $4.95 no matter how big the order and you have a pretty good deal.  I'm trying to get some stuff together for our ward's dry pack canning projects coming up.

Word of warning though: like I mentioned, I went there looking for chocolate.  Ended up buying 17 lbs of the stuff, including 5 lbs. of chocolate covered butter toffee almonds.  They are disgustingly tasty.  SO STAY AWAY FROM THE CHOCOLATE SECTION, FOR THE LOVE OF PETE.  evil, evil chocolate.

Use it when diapering your Cabbage Patch baby.

Dyany, check with your home storage center because I think you are not allowed to bring in stuff from outside to drypack there anymore, that was the message I received from our storage center guy. Unless of course you get the machine and do it in someone's home, then you can drypack what you want from outside sources.

Cabbage powder would be used for flavor, much like you would use onion powder. We have a lot of spices in our cupboard, because we figure it'll make it easier for us to stomach wheat and rice. If you go to Sam's Club, for instance, just pick up a big bottle of spices for $6-$7 each trip (we've been going monthly lately). It adds up.
During the food rationing in WWII, pepper was hard to get and thus very valuable. And it's still cheap to pick up 5 pound bags of it right now.

Yeeeeahhh.... like drypacking money or silver or gold coins for part of my coolio solve-the-mystery treasure hunt for Mom's inheritance when I die.... My kids will get into that.  nod.gif

Yea they have the jawbreakers I have been looking for. Now the question is how many pounds to buy...

I've only looked at their candy, I will have to look into their other products.

Drypacking money...that sure beats stuffing it in the mattress!

I really, really need to get around to my storage inventory and revised storage plan, because I have all these cool ideas and very little current plan.

I wasn't planning on taking it to the cannery, our ward does dry packing projects where we borrow a dry packer from the cannery and use it at someone's house with each person's own goods. But thanks for the reminder anyway. :)

I'm going to buy turbinado sugar in bulk and dry pack it. It's cheaper there than my local grocery store, and I have heard that natural sugars like that are a smidge kinder to insulin resistant individuals like myself (and besides it tastes better). And egg powder. It's great for recipes and adding protein to stuff.

As long as you don't smell it or think too hard about it, it works great! Though once when I was babysitting I ran out of eggs and had to use egg powder to finish a cake. Worked fine, but the egg powder smelled SO bad before we put it in that the kids were afraid to eat the cake! (though the cake smelled fine too.)

I was thinking of trying egg powder in cupcakes or pancakes or something first and see if anyone noticed "anything different."

Is egg powder dehydrated eggs, or an egg substitute? I've got an egg substitute for baking, and it doesn't smell at all.

(Boy, sometimes being on these forums makes me feel stupid. I've had to ask about fry sauce and enchilada sauce, I didn't know what a concealed permitty thing was ....)

Well, I just ordered a few things from there to try. I ordered $75 worth to get the free shipping. Thanks for the link to the website!

Dyany did you happen to price check against Winco's bulk section?

Dianoia -- egg powder is actually dehydrated eggs. And I don't know about the stuff from this website, but the stuff I got from a local food storage place was supposedly the same stuff and it smelled ICKY. But tasted just fine.

Jen -- only on one, and that was turbinado, because I actually sort of remembered the winco price. On that one, if you get the BIG amount (50 lbs) it's quite a bit cheaper from the site. My guess is that on some of the cheap stuff winco will still be better priced, but there is a TON of specialty stuff (like dried vegetables) on that site that I have never seen at winco but I think would be good for food storage.

I've used that dehydrated egg stuff. Nasty. And I could taste it in stuff that I baked too. I was almost relieved when my son dumped the stuff on the family room carpet and I had to throw it away. Almost.

By the way...don't try vacuuming it...it sticks to the inside of the vacuum/hose/whatever you use. At least, try to get as much up as possible before vacuuming.

For the record, powdered egg whites are far less stinky than the whole eggs. I use them for smoothies.

That site looks interesting, Dyany, thanks!

They don't replace whole eggs, no. sunnysideup.gif I've done a little bit of baking with them. I bought them with smoothies in mind and they working smashingly well for that.
