Yet Again, Berkeley does something outrageous.

Berkeley to Marine Corps. : Your Not Welcome

The Berkley city council voted 8-1 to kick the Marines out of their city, and to give their blessing to code pink to help.

I am not the only one upset with this

U.S. Senator Wants to Revoke Funding From City of Berkeley Calif...

We're cool! We're smart! We take our marching orders from Hollywood movies depicting the U.S. as a totalitarian military machine... so, to show that you people are evil and what is the problem in the world, we're gonna tell you to pack up your little recruiting offices and get out...

rolleyes

I say it would serve Berkeley, San Francisco, and other like minded havens for anti-America nuts on the west coast who are leaching off the system they are so against right if the military conveniently ignored them should an invasion or civil war broke out and those cities became beach heads for the enemy... let them fend for themselves...

If cities or schools do stuff like this, they should be denied federal funding. They are willing to reap the benefits of freedom the military provides such as tax dollars in their budgets but then show a complete disdain for the military.

Has the recruiting office suffered any real damages here? The Berkley council vote was one of those meaningless votes that is meant to pacify certain constiuents without really doing anything.

In addition, they are granting a group of US citizens the right to protest, as guarenteed by the Bill of Rights in the Constitution.

Legally exploring the "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy may make sense, since that is an insane policy to begin with.

Well there may not be damages but they are obviously not being treated equally and you could even make the case that they are harrassing a legal entity. Living in Nazifornia I can tell you that in the San Francisco area, of which Berkely is a part, the have a complete hatred for the military and anything traditional. It is worse than Sodom and Gamorah in many parts. When I was a kid we used to go on vacation and visit the area. I won't go there anymore because it really has gotten nasty. One of the few bright spots in the Temple on the Hill overlooking the Bay. The rest of it can fall into the sea for all I care.

The city should be brought up on discrimination charges itself if it gives this group free permits to protest where as other groups have to pay a fee for a permit to demonstrate where there is a noise level.

Bingo! I wonder if they would give a parking space in front of Planned Parenthood to an anti abortion group in addition to the free permit? Not likely!

Rereading the article, in this case it doesn't seem they are protesting the military, but rather a policy of the military which they view as discriminatory. If there is a policy of the military that I think is completely insane (weight limit for 6'4" men at 237 lbs, for example), I would not be anti-American or anti-"support the troops" to protest it and attempt to get it changed.

Ignoring possible injustices is also anti-American, even if the "offender" is the Military establishment. There is always room for improvement.

"Don't ask, don't tell" is a compromise solution. It's fairness doesn't really hold up under much scrutiny either way. Should gay men have to hide their orientation? Should they be discriminated against? No. Should straight men have to feel sexually harassed from their fellow soldiers? Absolutely not. These are two "rights" that cannot fit together in their fulness. Thus Solomon's compromise of "don't ask, don't tell".

Actually, the city may plan on using that as the legalese point to try and get them out... the group's protesting has nothing to do with the policy.

It is the same sort of social engineering strawman argument used against the BSA... you're discriminatory so we can't have you here and we'll force you out by mob rule and interpretation of the law. The reality is that they simply can't abide anything that does not agree with their political agenda. Code Pink is a feminist, anti-war group, not a alternative lifestyle supporter group.
