Power's Out

What are your plans for when the power goes out?  Do you have any?  Do you have a generator?  What kind?  How much fuel does it use?

I plan to someday get a generator so I can keep my freezer stuff frozen.

We lose power for about a week, every other year out here...

In those articles about how to cook in your car while driving, they suggest that one could cook in the car (on the grill thing) for some meals in such an event!

We have a 15kw generator that is natural gas powered and set up with a transfer switch. So, when the power drops even for a second the genny kicks on immediately and runs most of the whole house, except the stove and dryer, they being 220.

I don't have a generator. I keep 2 liter soda bottles frozen in my feezer to help extend the cold. If the power is out extended the freezer will get wrapped with loose insulation at the back and then several wool blankets at the front to help extend the freeze inside. Beyond that we will live with candles for light.

I have a fairly large deep freeze, that has two 10-gal buckets of ice in it. Plus a 30 lb frozen block of chicken breasts we got years ago.

We live on the top of a mountain in colorado and use a well, so cold and running water are big considerations. We got five 55-gal water barrels (3 of them would keep our horses watered for about a week.) We got propane space heaters and candles, and a gas stove. We got south facing windows that let in a lot of natural light. We got a few solar powered battery chargers to run our LED flashlights. We keep a few cans of gasoline, and swap them out every general conference.

Our wish list:
Generator
Fireplace that burns wood and coal
a ton of coal buried in the back yard
Hand-crank well pump

We'll probably just focus on the first one and move somewhere warmer eventually.

btw, typically when you get a generator you don't just plug it in, you need to get it installed by an electrician... so it's not something to put off doing.

PS> Other things to know, never run them inside the house, carbon monoxide kills about one family a year in this area due to this sort of thing... And if they're noisy and outside, chances are it will be stolen by your neigbors if you live in my neighborhood, anyhooo... cuz they're easy to hear, and in a real disaster, they're a hot commodity.

Plus, a generator is only as useful as the amount of gas you've stored for it (or so they tell me)

We'd use the wood-burning stove. We have lots of wood in a wood shed. I think we could cook with it, too... maybe on top or maybe "foil dinner" type stuff. I also keep 2 liter bottles of ice in the big freezer.

If we build our dream house, it will have at least two fireplaces or woodburning stoves. thumbsup.gif
