Dehydrated food prices to rise astronomically

I got the following email from www.internet-grocer.net. It sounds alarmist, but it matches with what I'm hearing from other people, including a guy that has a BBQ takeout store. He said that his supplier has raised his meat prices 37% just since the holidays.

We were advised today (Jan. 23, 2008) that NO food supplier will guarantee pricing any longer than three (3) weeks.  Food prices are rising ASTRONOMICALLY!  You can thank the Muslim oil producers, AND our government's meddling and forcing ethanol gasoline on us, for this.

Our dehydrated foods supplier is NOW working on a revised price list that will be out in a few days and all our prices WILL be going up.  They told us that the only way they can think of to stabilize their pricing is to over-price items so they can absorb the increases that will follow (and not have to revise every 3 weeks).

If you have ANY intention of setting back some foods for hard times, or camping, or sailing.  DO IT NOW!  Putting it off could cost you 2 or 3 times as much.

This will be the only warning or notice we will send.  Visit http://www.internet-grocer.net/dehydrtd.htm to take advantage of today's pricing.

You'd also be wise to stock up on canned goods at your grocery store.....

PS - This is NOT a marketing gimmick.  It's a genuine alert!  We'll make the same amount whether you order now, or if you wait until prices go up.  We'd just like to see you have your dollar go further.

I agree that prices for food are really going up and I don't see any possible way they could go down in the near future. If you can put stuff away now, I think you should. It won't get any easier.

Yeah, it's not too late to repent if you don't have your year's supply, but it's only going to get harder and harder if you put it off.

It sure SOUNDS like a marketing gimmick. But I'm still focusing on getting our years' supply this year. I'm not going to run out and spend tons of money to get all of it right this second, though.

Well, obviously you can only spend as much as you have means for. But I'm going to spend my discretionary income on dehydrated foods this paycheck, because it will be harder to do so later.
Like I said, I'd be more inclined to disbelieve it if I weren't hearing the same thing from other sources.

One way to pick up the bulk (one year supply) freeze dried & dehydrated foods is to use your tax refund (if you get one) when it arrives to purchase one or more. That is how we got our start.

Watch for specials, too. Recently I picked up a #10 can of Mountain House Beef Stroganoff for 20% off.

If you want to know if it is a gimmic or not, watch the church cannery prices. If they do not increase, you'll know it is a gimmic. They don't much in the way of dehydrated foods, but it is a non-profit food source.

I got the same email. And I've heard the same things from many sources...including a notice that cannery prices are going to increase.

That won't make a good comparison. Dehydrated and freeze dried foods are always higher in price. The church will also keep the costs as low as possible as long as possible. I've sent an email to Emergency Essentials asking about the stability of thier prices. I'll post their response when (IF) I get it.

All I know is, the food prices at Wal mart and Costco have gone through the roof.

It's ridiculous....if I were to raise my prices that much, some folks would just walk out and find someone else.

Bottom line is, my bottom line is going to stink this year.

Mahonri, no kidding. I know that my paycheck isn't going to rise that much this year.

For some reason, I still like to buy what I'm actually seeing. So this means I do a lot of shopping at Macey's. Plus I do some every week - not a big "all at once" shipment or anything.

I contacted Emergency Essentials and asked them about the potential for price increases in freeze dried and dehydrated foods. This was their response:

Dear mirkwood,

Thank you for your email. We anticipate that our prices will be stable, although this market has known to change the availability of items and the stability of prices overnight. There is an added demand for wheat right now so that item may increase in price over time. Thank you again for your email.

Hmm, so maybe this place is pulling a marketing gimmick. But then again, if I remember correctly, emergency essentials doesn't handle the bulk food (like buckets of cornmeal). If I'm not mistaken, that's what's going up in price. Given the shelf life of Mountain House foods, for instance, they could have been manufactured a year ago and they're just now selling it to you.

Added demand for wheat, huh? Glad I just bought some more. clap.gif

They're sure not making any promises.

I don't know about cornmeal, but Emergency Essentials does handle bulk stuff. I've bought buckets of lentils, sugar, and instant milk from them.

Arbi, I thought you were talking about dehydrated foods, as in "freeze dried". I've never heard of freeze dried cornmeal. How would that work?

FTR, freeze dried and dehydrated are different processes.
